Studies report that between 1995 – 2007, 82 children were fatally injured after trying the dare. For one Pennsylvanian mother, this challenge resulted in the tragic passing of her 10-year-old daughter, Nylah Anderson — and she wants to warn other parents about the dangers the challenge can pose for kids. “Make sure you’re checking your kids’ phones,” she said. “Just pay attention, because you never know what you might find.” Licensed clinical social worker Elizabeth Wood claimed that Nylah was in her bedroom when she tried the challenge. “No one was in the bedroom with her when this happened, so there was no one there to save her.” Nylah’s family rushed her to the hospital, but she did not survive. The latest craze began when a TikToker, @cittadininondistratti2 posted a clip of a woman yelling the phrase “Attenzione pickpockets!” at pickpockets in Italy, often warning tourists of a pickpocketer in the area. What is TikTok’s ‘Attenzione Pickpocket’? The woman in the original video was trying to caution people around her about pickpockets as she yelled, “Attenzione Pickpocket!” which simply translates as ‘Attention: Pickpocket!’ in English. As for the TikToker that originally posted it, the username ‘Cittadini Non Distratti’ translates to ‘Citizens not distracted’. The original account was suspended but a new account called @cittadininondistratti2 was made later to continue the videos. The account has over 300,000 followers and consists of identical videos of the same woman screaming the Italian phrase to make sure everybody around her is aware of the thieves. Renken’s 17-year-old daughter had to be rushed to the emergency room after suffering 2nd-degree burns while making sugar wax, leaving her with a blister “bigger than her thumb.” Taking to Facebook, Renken issued a warning on the unseen dangers that many TikTokers have failed to mention in their sugar waxing tutorials. “If your child comes to you [and] says ‘I’m going to make sugar wax,’ caution them against it. The ER doctor said that those videos are not giving the disclaimer that when you reheat the wax, it’s uneven, and then when you stir it, there’s a reaction between the hot and cold elements to this homemade wax,” Renken explained. “That is what happened here. She stirred it and it POPPED on her thumb [causing] a significant 2nd-degree burn that will take weekly trips to the burn clinic [and] months to heal.” The blister popped by itself overnight, with the burn reportedly taking four weeks to heal. As per the New York Post, Renken claimed her daughter now feels “deceived” by the TikTok videos on her For You page advertising sugar waxing. “I think with every DIY project video [on TikTok] there should be some parental consent or age recommendations on the video just like there are on toys,” she said.

The SoundOn website describes it as “an all-in-one platform for marketing and distribution, helping you build a career and find new fans through TikTok, exclusive partners (Resso, CapCut), and on other digital streaming platforms through our global distribution service.” Distribution of music through SoundOn is currently free of charge, as the company says that all transaction fees will be waived. Instagram / TikTokWith the terrifying news that TikTok could be banned in the United States, several competitors have come out of the woodwork to try to capitalize on TikTok’s immense success – including Instagram’s new ‘Reels’. Reels launched yesterday on August 5, and it’s Instagram’s answer to TikTok, enabling users who already have an account to make and discover short-form videos. The product has just been launched across 50 countries including key markets such as the US, UK, Brazil, France, and Australia. What’s Different? To begin with, short-form videos are limited to 15 seconds, whereas TikTok allows 60 seconds. At launch, Reels users won’t be able to duet with each other either. But like TikTok, Reels offers different editing tools such as AR effects, countdown timers, and an align tool to line up different takes. Instagram will offer music, but users won’t be able to directly upload songs into the system. Original sounds can be used in recordings, but they cannot be uploaded directly as separate tracks. However, one advantage over TikTok is that users don’t have to worry so much about copyrighted tracks being deleted from their videos, thanks to Instagram’s deals with major record labels. How to use it The Reels feature is built into the Instagram camera users already know how to use, so the whole thing stays within the one app. At the bottom of the screen, you can select Reels next to the Story and Live options. Editing tools will then appear on the left-hand side. Is there a version of the For You page? To an extent. Reels can be discovered through a new part of the explore space within Instagram where videos are presented in a personalized vertical feed, much like TikTok. Videos can also be featured which means that they’re chosen and curated by Instagram itself. Reels can be private or public, so they can be uploaded to your normal feed or your stories, or you can opt for them to be discoverable in the explore tab. According to How Stuff Works, what makes this 14th-century Polish stew unique is that it’s often “skimmed and strained, leaving behind only dark, rich broth.” Consumers of the stew get to taste the complex flavor profile left behind by all the different ingredients added during its different iterations. Annie Rauwerda is documenting her experience making a medieval soup called “perpetual stew,” and TikTok is eating it up. TikToker went viral after making everlasting perpetual stew Rauwerda’s stew journey began in June when she posted a video announcing she would make it and document it on her TikTok, @depthsofwikipedia. Rauwerda also runs an Instagram account of the same name, where she posts screenshots of oddities she’s found on the popular site to an audience of more than one million followers. In the video, she shows the Crockpot that will house the stew and says she has invited friends over to add their ingredients to the concoction. In order to maintain food safety, How Stuff Works advises keeping the soup “around 200 degrees Fahrenheit” at all times. In a follow-up video two days later, Rauwerda proved that her friends made good on their promise to add to the stew. She showed clips of her friends and the various ingredients they brought. These ingredients included: a clove of garlic, a bunch of carrots, a potato, a bunch of parsley, and some onions, to name a few. On the fourth day of the perpetual stew, Rauwerda updated her more than 171,000 followers by letting them know that dill was “overpowering the flavor.” TikToker allows viewers to take part in tasting and making the stew Six days into the stew’s simmering, Rauwerda hosted a gathering at a park in Brooklyn’s Bushwick neighborhood where strangers could add to the concoction as well as try the now-famous stew. According to a TikTok after the meet-up, Rauwerda said about 50 people came and ate the stew and that she was even recognized at the grocery story as “stew girl.” Since then, Rauwerda has hosted four more stew parties on the 10th, 17th, 30th, and 33rd day of cooking, and everyone who tries it seems to love it. “The stew was definitely 4.8 stews out of 5,” a guest named Stu said about the 17-day-old stew he’d just tried. “I thought the stew was fantastic,” another guest named Nate said. Rauwerda is currently over 40 days old, and she is keeping fans posted about everything that’s happening with the stew, from what ingredients are added to when people have the chance to taste it themselves, on a designated blog. She also continues to keep viewers posted on her TikTok, but not everyone seems to be too sure about it. One person commented: “Genuinely curious is this like safe to eat? no hate I’m just like how does it not go bad at some point?” Rauwerda responded: “The broth is always cooking so it’s too hot for harmful bacteria! Veggies do get mushy but I try to put them in at strategic times so they cycle out!!”

TikTok’s ‘post to view’ explained ‘Post to view’ is the latest addition to TikTok’s ‘Now’ feature, which allows “daily photo and video experience to share your most authentic moments with the people who matter the most.” Users now receive daily ‘Time to Now’ notifications with a prompt to post a ten-second video or a photo to share with friends. Once posted within the three-minute window, it will then unlock other posts for you to see. This feature also allows you to view your past uploads, but you won’t be able to see it for your friends. Anyone who wants to use it must be 13 years old and above, or 14 years old and above for people in South Korea or Indonesia. Jesus was then left for dead, on top of his car, after being sprayed down. While he was waiting for medical assistance, the character was doused in gasoline and blown up. “Oh really? You’ve got to go that far with it? Ok, I guess it’s perma time,” said Sentry as he was being killed. Why did Sentry choose to perma? The streamer decided to close the book on the Jesus character because of what had happened. One of the victims was Esra Haynes, a 13-year-old student from Melbourne, Australia. Esra passed away on 31 March 2023, from chemical exposure while at a sleepover after taking part in the TikTok trend. She reportedly sniffed an aerosol deodorant, which is believed to be what caused her death. After participating in the activity, Haynes suffered irreparable brain damage and a cardiac arrest, according to The Sun. She was hospitalized for a week before she died. Haynes’ parents are now warning others of the risks associated with chroming, which has grown popular on social media. Paul Haynes said on the Australian TV show ‘A Current Affair‘: “Esra would’ve never have done this if she’d had known the consequences. That it could take your life.” What is the chroming challenge on social media? The word ‘chroming’ is an informal term that originates from Australia. It refers to the act of inhaling fumes from a toxic source, such as an aerosol can, a spray deodorant, or a paint container. On TikTok, users engaging in ‘chroming’ post videos under the term ‘WhipTok’, a slang term for the recreational use of nitrous oxide. ‘Whiptok’ has over 546.3 million views on the platform. According to the National Retail Association in Australia, even if the term “chroming” has expanded, the term first originated from the practice of sniffing chrome-based paint to achieve a high. Some examples of toxic chemicals used are aerosol cans, paint, solvents, permanent markers, nail polish remover, hairspray, deodorants, lighter fluid, glue, cleaning supplies, nitrous oxide, and gasoline. Another teen dies as a possible result of TikTok “chroming” challenge In September 2023, another teen died as a possible result of the TikTok “chroming” fad, with Irish authorities investigating the death of 14-year-old Sarah Mescall. According to reports from the Irish Independent, Mescall passed away on September 25, three days after being admitted to Crumlin Children’s Hospital in Dublin. She reportedly collapsed after allegedly partaking in the “chroming” challenge and woke up at some point to tell her mother what happened before fainting again. Mescall was then placed into a medically-induced coma and succumbed to her injuries. TikTok responds to death of teen from supposed “chroming” challenge TikTok released a statement in response to Mescall’s death. “Content of this nature is prohibited on our platform and would be removed if found,” the statement said. “We will continue to prioritize protecting and supporting our community, working with expert partners and providing safety resources to those who need them.” 11-year-old boy dies after allegedly attempting “chroming” challenge On March 6, 2024, it was reported that an 11-year-old boy also died after supposedly trying the “chroming” challenge at a sleepover with friends. Authorities claim they found the boy unresponsive at the scene, and he was later pronounced dead at the hospital. The boy’s grandmother spoke out against TikTok in a statement to local news, claiming she wants TikTok banned for good in order to prevent more deaths. “We want to get TikTok taken down, and no children to be allowed on any social media under 16 years of age,” she claimed. “This is breaking us all, but we want to help save other children’s lives and give families awareness to keep their children safe.” Man arrested in connection of 11-year-old’s death from TikTok “chroming” challenge In June 2024, Lancashire Police stated that a 25-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of “child cruelty, neglect, possession with intent to supply a drug and money laundering” in connection to Tommy-lee’s death. A 35-year-old woman was also questioned on allegations of “possession with intent to supply” as part of the investigation. 12-year-old girl hospitalized after allegedly attempting “chroming” challenge A 37-year-old mom in the United Kingdom is sending out a warning to parents after her 12-year-old daughter, Tiegan, reportedly huffed “five or six cans” of spray-on deodorant with a friend at a sleepover in an attempt at trying the viral “chroming” challenge sweeping social media in April 2024. The mom, Mikayla Solomon, brought her daughter to the emergency room after she started experiencing worrying symptoms of “dizziness and heart palpitations.” Although Tiegan was released with a clean bill of health, she began to suffer from even more symptoms like “severe diarrhea, sulfuric burps and a sensation that everything was in slow motion,” as per the New York Post. Solomon claimed her daughter threw up for “two weeks straight,” and although they went back to the emergency room for more testing, reports came back negative. Now, Solomon is using her experience to warn other parents about the impact social media can have on their young children. “Parents need to know the dangers,” Mikayla said. “If you think your child has done this, get them checked. It can cause long-term damage.” 12-year-old boy goes into cardiac arrest after inhaling can of deodorant 36-year-old mom of four, Nichola King, found her 12-year-old son Cesar seizing on the floor after he attempted the “chroming” challenge. The incident took place in the summer of 2024 after Cesar was introduced to the TikTok trend by an older friend. “He went blue and stopped breathing. I thought he’d died,” Nichola, who performed CPR on her son, said. When Cesar was brought to the hospital, he was placed into a medically-induced coma for 48 hours after going into cardiac arrest. He ultimately regained his strength and was released from the hospital eight days later. However, the 12-year-old faces memory damage, as his mom said his short-term memory is “very bad,” adding that Cesar doesn’t remember taking part in the challenge. Much like many other parents of those who have attempted the chroming challenge, Nichola shared her son’s story in hopes of preventing others from trying the trend. She also told Cesar to never participate in anything so dangerous ever again – something that he assured his mom he would agree to.
