SUPERHOT is a slow-motion VR game that brought Hamlinz to his knees – literally! After playing the game for over an hour, Hamlin crouched on the floor with a VR headset strapped to his face began to yellow, firing off his weapon only to realize that he had ran out of bullets. With no weapon to defend himself and intense music from the anime Naruto playing in the background, the streamer grabbed glass bottles in a last-ditch effort to protect himself from bullets and tried to throw them at the bright red enemies who continued to fire at him. With virtual glass smashing, Hamlinz let out a desperate cry of “No, please!” as his character fell to the ground, struck down by his opponents in a final battle. Virtual Reality headsets allow players to really get into the action, with players able to use the technology to look around their surroundings as if they were there in person. This, quite often, leads to incredible moments like this one where those wearing the headset momentarily forget that they’re actually playing a game. During his time with the eye-tracking technology, Hamlinz pulled up a clip of fellow streamer Pokimane, who was discussing the whereabouts of her missing underwear after moving. Hamlinz’ Twitter account was taken over by hackers who call themselves the “Chuckling Squad” on August 29, and they immediately began posting links to their discord and asking for follows. One thing in common with all the hacks in 2019 so far have been they all ask for follows almost right away. Immediately after posting the links, the hackers started mentioning other streamers, like Pokimane and Ninja, and sending inflammatory messages to them. “Ayyy @TSM_Myth done piped Pokimane!” read one of many tweets. The hackers also began spamming racial slurs in many of their tweets. With cases like this, they are usually resolved pretty quickly but considering how late in the day Hamlinz streams, it’s entirely possible has wasn’t even awake when the hack happened. For what it’s worth, the hackers appear to have a dark sense of humor as they had a cheeky response to someone asking if Hamlinz had been hacked. “No shit sherlock,” they said to the question. The hackers engaged with a lot of back and forth between fans of Hamlinz who were trying to stick up for him. This latest hack comes exactly a month after Fortnite World Cup winner Kyle ‘Bugha’ Giersdorf had his Twitter and Twitch both hacked immediately after his big win. Bugha was able to get to Instagram to explain that it wasn’t him on Twitter but Hamlinz has yet to do so, and it doesn’t really seem like he has to since it’s so clear. In a statement released on December 6, 2019, the 25-year-old admitted that he had been through “so much b.s.” in the year, and had taken time off to focus on his own physical and mental health, along with the wellbeing of girlfriend and editor Exie. The streamer had said that he would be getting back into the swing of things as the year ended, and intended to be fully back by January 2020. While many streamers have attempted to get the pair to hop back in front of a camera, those attempts have proven fruitless. True Geordie has become somewhat of a big name in the UK YouTube scene. He hosted the first Logan Paul v KSI fight, as well as a podcast that regularly gets in big-name guests such as Logan himself, boxer Tyson Fury and comedy extraordinaire Ricky Gervais. While wrestling between the YouTube space and breaking into the mainstream, though, True Geordie — real name Brian Davis — was obviously shocked to see Heineken announce a show with the same name as one he hosts. With the return of the UEFA Champions League on August 7, Heineken tweeted out that they would be celebrating by hosting a livestream on YouTube and Facebook, calling the show “The Kick Off.” Anyone familiar with True Geordie will know that he already runs his own show called The Kick Off, in which he discusses everything going on in the world of football. On Monday, November 7, drama erupted as True Geordie was accused of Islamophobic comments, after making a joke that Tate, a Muslim, should “do the right thing,” with an implication that the divisive social media star should “blow himself up” as suggested in a prior comment. These comments immediately started to go viral and were picked up across TikTok, Twitter, and further afield, eventually being heard by Tate himself. Tate was quick to respond to Davis, saying: “After me converting to Islam, he made a piece on one of his podcasts saying I’m not true in my conversion, and then insulted all Muslims. Making f**king racist comments about an entire religion as if that’s somehow funny. Let me tell you something my friend, and True Geordie if you are watching this, this is a message directly to you. There are certain times in life when you need to know when to shut the f**k up. “To insult my religion, and the religion of billions of people across the f**king planet, making ignorant jokes about blowing ourselves up, thinking it’s gonna go without consequence, you’re gonna learn very quickly my friend that was a mistake.” This was then met, very swiftly, with an apology from Geordie, who said it was just an “idiotic joke” at the expense of “someone who seriously dislikes me.” Due to the gravity of the situation, however, many have not accepted the apology, and Gymshark appears to have placed itself in that group. Truck driver kills five in deadly highway pile up while browsing TikTok Maricopa County Sheriff’s OfficeA semi-truck driver has been arrested and charged with manslaughter after causing a fiery crash in Arizona that killed five people. Danny G. Tiner was arrested on June 29, 2023, on five counts of manslaughter, four counts of endangerment, and one of tampering with physical evidence, the Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) announced in a statement. The 36-year-old driver was browsing the TikTok app while driving 68 mph in a 55-mph construction zone on Interstate 10, when his semi-truck collided with stopped traffic on January 12. His commercial tractor-trailer shoved two cars between another semi and two other vehicles, which caused the crushed cars to burst into flames, killing five people. The accident shut down the freeway for 11 hours, 3TV/CBS 5 reported. Tiner said he “received a message on his electronic work tablet and acknowledged the message,” according to the AZDPS statement. “Tiner said when he looked back up traffic was stopped, and he could not stop his vehicle in time to avoid a collision.” Upon further investigation, AZDPS and the FBI found that he’d been speeding prior to the crash and was distracted with the popular video app while doing so. That information was found after Tiner turned his phone over to officials, and a forensic examination was conducted through his device. The 36-year-old was driving a semi-truck for Mr. Bult’s Inc., a waste transportation firm that’s been involved in at least 26 crashes in Arizona in just two years, 3TV/CBS 5 said. At the time of writing, Tiner remains in custody at Maricopa County Jail. His bail, set at $300,000, has not been posted, and he is due in court on July 7, according to court documents obtained by CNN. While video game streaming has long been dominated by Twitch, there appears to be a new kid on the block. 2020 saw the collapse of Mixer, and the emergence of Trovo, a new streaming platform from Chinese tech company Tencent. It has focused on promoting mobile games and grass-root esports, and has seen its viewership rise consistently across 2020. The final quarter of 2020 saw this figure rise to 20.81 million hours. The growth was already well underway, but Trovo’s explosion in early 2021 may have surprised even the platform itself. For the first three months of 2021 they racked up 47.57 million hours, over 5 times more than Q3 of 2020. It is a hallmark of a streaming platform on the up, attracting new viewers thanks to its diversity of content and focus on mobile gaming. Not only does hours watched suggest viewers are investing more time, but also that there are considerably more viewers investing their free time into Trovo. Trovo Brand Manager, Silu Wang, spoke to StreamsCharts about the exponential growth: “Diversity and inclusiveness are key to Trovo’s aims. We prioritized mobile gaming when we first started because the mobile gaming community was not really a priority anywhere else and that did not sound right to us at all. “However, prioritizing mobile gaming doesn’t mean we ignore other communities. Respecting all communities on our platform and serving these communities in each respective way are what we are aiming at.” The most popular categories on Trovo continue to be Grand Theft Auto and Call of Duty but, with the platform’s growth only going one way, we could see the prominence of other titles improve massively.

Trovo is using mobile gaming tricks to make streamers more money than on Twitch or Kick Burgeoning livestreaming service, Trovo, doesn’t have the reach of bigger platforms like Twitch and YouTube, but claims streamers are earning way more on their site – so how are they doing it? In May, Trovo posted a tweet comparing three streamers and the earnings they made in a month. One streamer was on Twitch, one was on Kick, and another was on Trovo. According to Trovo’s case study, the Trovo streamer, “Despite having fewer viewers […] earned significantly more per hour compared to other platforms.” Indeed, the final numbers were: Twitch: $3.63, Kick: $12.61, and Trovo: $245. This tweet, however, was met with immediate skepticism. Some doubted that the figures could be extrapolated to more streamers, and suggested Trovo had simply cherry-picked a particularly extreme example. Dexerto asked Trovo to send us more information, including stats on more Trovo streamers, to see if their claims would continue to be true. We also questioned the very high sub numbers for Trovo streamers, compared to their viewership. From what we’ve seen, Trovo does indeed provide the potential for much higher earnings for a small-to-medium-sized streamer than other platforms. This is largely thanks to the gamification of its monetization systems. However, there are still some drawbacks to streaming on Trovo, and we have some concerns about how well these systems will scale if the platform grows. How does Trovo make more money for streamers? Trovo is different from Twitch and Kick in many ways, but one of them is that it’s much more popular for mobile gaming, and its audience is not as heavily US-based. Rather, South America, Europe and MENA are its dominant markets. This connection to mobile gaming has been reflected in how it monetizes content. Channels participate in what are called “PK battles” which are essentially competitions between two channels to get a higher number of points, earned through viewers supporting the stream monetarily. Trovo also pushes what’s called the “Ace” program, which immediately reminds us of the ‘VIP’ options some mobile games use. Ace is a platform subscription, and is for the “ballers” Trovo said. There is a number of levels that can be paid for, and Trovo says big spenders will pay for it, thanks to the benefits it provides. Twitch does have features like sub badges, which increase with loyalty. But users can’t manually increase these badges on a whim, rather they have to keep subscribing for months and years to see the badge change. On Trovo, viewers can more actively engage in improving their “rank” in the chat, through constant donations. And there are seemingly endless ways to make these donations. In truth, it would be difficult to explain them all, but the primary currency is spells and elixirs. These are akin to Twitch bits, and viewers can spend anything from $0.05 to hundreds of dollars giving these to the channel. All of it comes back to the gamified model though, and the PK battles. This direct, head-to-head, form of monetization, allows two communities to battle it out, and everyone wins – the viewers, the platform, and of course, the streamer. Viewers can “earn exclusive badges, avatars, and rewards for their participation” in battles, Trovo explains, which is often enough for them to part with their cash. The smaller minimum donations are no doubt an important part of this too, especially considering there is no regional pricing, so everything is transacted in USD. There is also a game-of-chance aspect to some donation types. Spells are RNG-based, meaning viewers may spin the wheel, so to speak, in repeated attempts to get better and better spells. How much do Trovo streamers make? This varies massively of course, but Trovo did provide us with evidence of some eye-opening figures. For example, one streamer who averages only 66 viewers, raked in $17,637 in just 30 days. And it wasn’t just a one-off. In previous months they earned $22,060 and $16,139, in March and February respectively. Of course, this isn’t the same for everyone. It will certainly be the case that some streamers are making very little on the platform too. Trovo says that the amount streamers earn depends on how actively they engage with all of the various monetization features on the platform. Some may be too shy, or feel bad for pushing it, but if they do, the rewards can be lucrative. This is also the reason that sub numbers are way higher on Trovo. First of all, a basic sub is cheaper, at only $2, as opposed to the minimum of $5 on Twitch and Kick (regional pricing does make this cheaper for some countries). But subs can also contribute to PK battles, and are rewarding for viewers too. Both streamers and viewers can also join ‘teams’ on the platform, which can then engage in these battles together. Twitch does have a teams feature, although it is limited to streamers, and is not used for any monetization purposes. Should you move to Trovo? If you’re a streamer, these numbers will certainly be enticing. However, despite the impressive pitch from Trovo, there’s still a few questions you should be asking yourself before making the switch. One is about the size of Trovo’s audience. It is significantly smaller than Twitch, and even Kick. Similarweb, which independently reports site traffic, estimates that Trovo gets around 13 million visits a month. This is compared to Kick’s 75 million and Twitch’s 1 billion-plus. This can also mean that you are a bigger fish in a smaller pond, especially if you bring across a following from another platform already. But, Trovo’s monetization is also somewhat reliant on its more concentrated user base. For example, one feature sends out a sitewide notification when certain monetization goals are met, directing people to that channel. This may be ok on a smaller site, but we can only imagine the controversy if Twitch added such a feature. Additionally, one complaint we had when watching some streams was that the content felt too heavily focused on donations and subs. One streamer we watched, for around five minutes straight, discussed nothing except their progress in the PK Battle they were currently engaged in. It could be that this type of content does have an audience, but it’s certainly not for everyone, and this could hamper Trovo’s ability to grow. Trovo explained that how much monetization dominates the stream is still up to the streamer – but does their earning potential shrink if they are not talking about spells, donations, and PK Battles frequently? Trovo is aware of these concerns though, and knows that it may need to adapt if the platform was to grow. It’s worth mentioning too, that Trovo encourages multistreaming – so they are more than happy for streamers to broadcast on these rival sites at the same time. However, Twitch has recently prohibited anyone streaming on their site from simulcasting elsewhere, on “Twitch-like” platforms, which Trovo would certainly fall under. So, is Trovo the best platform for streamers? Not necessarily, but, there is definitely a lucrative opportunity for a certain type of streamer, who is happy to lean into the monetization features, and reap the benefits. In a time where Twitch is facing stiffer competition and its own controversies, Trovo is well-timed in its offensive, and we’d always argue that more competition, in general, is the best result for streamers and viewers.

Hank Green has had some serious longevity in the world of internet stardom. From propelling the vlogbrothers into the public eye with the Harry Potter-based tune “Accio Deathly Hallows” back in 2007 to hosting podcasts with Ryan Reynolds in 2022, the science communicator’s track record is unmatched in terms of variety. Part of how Green has stayed in the limelight for so long is his thoughtful view on the world of online content creation, and as the cofounder of VidCon, he’s seen just about everything there is to offer. That’s why the rest of the internet listens when he makes a point to highlight when something doesn’t sit right or develops into a worrying trend on a big platform. Hank Green is ‘freaked out’ about deepfake channels on YouTube The Complexly cofounder and Crash Course host started off the conversation by warning everyone else not to go into “attack mode” right away, hoping instead to have a nuanced discussion about why he believes that well-done deepfakes could be dangerous. One of the first points he raised was about quality and believability, calling the videos “pretty well done” but not entirely convincing. “They aren’t mean spirited, but they do have the “characters” say things those guys would never say.” Even if they’re not a perfect interpretation, Green went on to say the potential ramifications of this content becoming more popular is a scary thought. “Even if one video is fine, you never know what you’re going to see yourself do in the next one. Alinity seems to be everywhere right now, and not for good reason. With allegations of abusing her cat, the steamer’s woes are now spreading throughout the Twitch community and beyond. From Imane ‘Pokimane‘ Anys slamming her actions on stream, to Nordan ‘FaZe Rain‘ Shat calling her a “stupid b*tch” in a YouTube video, the clip of Alinity throwing her cat has gotten a reaction out of many. Now it seems people are using the drama to troll xQc in a hilarious way. xQc’s stream goes awry While streaming Minecraft, xQc was in the middle of tunneling through the ground when he received a donation from a fan that came with a comically peculiar rant about Alinity. “I had a run in with Alinity today when I was walking my cat. She tried to give it vodka, and my cat stood strong and refused.” the message began. “She tried to pick up my cat and throw it behind her back, my cat stood strong and refused. Alinity, in defeat, walked away in agony.” The bizarre message then changed into what appeared to be an advert for VPN service ‘NordVPN’, though it’s not clear whether the advertisement came from the company itself or if it was just put in at an attempt to be funny: “Luckily earlier that day I had downloaded NordVPN on my cat. With NordVPN, my cat was able to stand strong under pressure from a formidable threat”. The message was made all the better by xQc’s expressionless face, as Minecraft’s relaxing music played in the background. It didn’t seem to phase him much, as he’d already had more than enough time to be flooded with the Alinity situation, as he had reacted to it on a previous stream. xQc’s reaction to Alinity The Canadian streamer’s reaction to the ‘infamous’ cat throwing clip was how most of us upon seeing the video: shock and bewilderment. He decided to watch it during his July 18 broadcast to see what all the fuss was about. “Holy shit!” he exclaimed with his mouth wide open, clearly flabbergasted by Alinity’s actions. “Damn, dude!” It is unclear at this point whether Twitch will be banning the female streamer for her actions.

In an Instagram post, Price revelled in joy after it was announced that a parliamentary committee had agreed with the former Eurovision runner-up that spreading online hate on the social media must be made illegal. The announcement comes after Price’s petition to make online abuse an illegal offense reached over 220,000 signatures. The House of Commons Petition Committee deemed current laws on hate speech does not adequately protect people from being harassed online, per their report. “There is no excuse for the continued failure to make online platforms as safe for disabled people. Self-regulation has failed disabled people and the law must change to ensure more lives are not destroyed,” said Committee chair Helen Jones MP. Jones continued to say that Harvey’s experience wasn’t unique and that social media entities must be held partially responsible for letting these “toxic environments” exist without repercussion. “The law on online abuse is not fit for purpose and it is truly shameful that disabled people have been forced off social media while their abusers face no consequences,” Jones said. Price’s petition calls for online abusers to be entered in an official register, since the hate isn’t unique to people with disabilities. The proposed changes would also look to protect against “racism, homophobia, body shaming and a whole range of other hate speech.”

GUCCI lost its lawsuit in a Japanese court, after the Italian fashion house tried to block CUGGL for attempting to trademark a “confusing” logo, which it claimed was essentially its trademark. The Japan Patent Office dismissed the opposition, concluding that there weren’t enough similarities between both logos for GUCCI to make a solid case. Per Financial Times, the owner of CUGGL is Osaka-based Nobuaki Kurokawa, who sells t-shirts parodying famous brands. He has reimagined the Puma mark into other animal names such as pug, labra(dor) and pome(ranian). These shirts sell on his website at about $12 to $25. Social media users react to CUGGL A Twitter user shared the news that the Japanese troll brand won its lawsuit against the luxurious Italian fashion house. The tweet also showed the logo of CUGGL, which GUCCI argued was essentially its trademark partially covered with a hot-pink brush stroke. Hundreds of users replied to the viral tweet, which has over 25,000 likes, as many sided with Nobuaki Kurokawa, even calling him a “genius” for trolling the high-end luxury brand. “BIGGEST TROLL [laughing crying emoji]” one user wrote. “This is genius! More of this please haha” someone else added. “Holy hell this is clever” someone shared. Another user agreed, adding “Why is this low key hard lol.” Kurokawa applied for the trademark for CUGGL, along with a variation reading ‘GUANFI’ back in October 2020. Gucci, however, only spotted the registration much later. The Italian fashion house accused its opponent of trademarking the CUGGL symbol with “malicious intent to free-ride goodwill and reputation” of its brand, as stated by Osaka-based trademark attorney Masaki Mikami. The Japanese Patent Office refuted the comparisons between the GUCCI and CUGGL logos and said it could not identify any resemblances “from visual, phonetic, and conceptual points of view.” As there was a “low degree of similarity” between the two, the Board concluded that consumers couldn’t possibly mix the two logos up.

Numerous social media accounts sent messages on behalf of the Tate’s while they were being held by authorities, but now they’re back home, they’ve started streaming again. Their return stream was watched by over 400,000 viewers and contained some claims about their arrests. Tate brothers claim they’re being investigated for stealing TikTok income “Here is the official story. In 2021, two years ago, my brother and I formed an organized criminal gang with the intent of moving women to Romania so we could steal money from their TikTok accounts to enrich ourselves,” Tristan said during their stream. He acknowledged that he used to run a webcam studio, where women were put to work, but it is now defunct. He claimed there is “no link” between that and what he and his brother are currently being accused of. “That is the narrative, that is what I have been arrested for,” he added, referring back to the claim about making money from TikTok. “This is the first time publicly I can finally clear that up.” As per Reuters and other reports, the Tate brothers and the two female suspects’ official charges are for forming an organized criminal gang, suspected human trafficking of multiple victims, and an accusation of rape. The Tate brothers deny all charges. Charges against them were recently “broadened” and changed the investigation to a focus on “human trafficking in continued form.” This, as per Romanian officials, is a “more serious crime” than the separate counts of trafficking and as such could land them up to 10 years of prison time.

However, it was her comments about identifying as a gay man that has caught the attention of some viewers, with Paytas being accused of sensationalizing a marginalized community. “Here’s the thing. I identify with men better. People always think there’s something wrong with me because I don’t have that many girl friends,” she said during the upload. “I do love girls and I love their sensitivity and stuff like that, but that’s why I identify more as a gay man – because I like guys, but also identify as a guy.” Drag queen persona Vicky Vox was one of the many critics who spoke out against Paytas’ video on Twitter. The WWE appointed Triple H on July 25 as the new head of creative duties. Triple H wrestled for 20 years and held several executive positions before taking over as the lead man. The wrestling legend and Logan Paul plan to take the WWE in a “new direction” following McMahon’s retirement.
