A master of political satire, Verhoeven adapted Robert A Heinlein’s 1959 novel about mankind’s endless war against a planet of giant bugs into one of the best action movies ever, not to mention one of the goriest. People’s bodies are torn apart by the insect horde, only to be replaced in short order as part of the United Citizen Federation’s endless effort to eradicate their enemies. The lead character, Johnny Rico, helps lead a new generation of soldiers in the gruesome tirade. But he came to the screen some years before Verhoeven’s film. Starship Troopers anime is streaming for free Almost a decade prior to the RoboCop director’s take on Heinlein’s book, a short anime show was produced by Bandia Visual. This version places Johnny and his soldiers-in-arms into mechs for the battle against the insect scum, making the war seem more grandiose and operatic than in the live-action version. Sequences are less horrific and more action-oriented, with large flashing explosions and bullets flying every which way. The bug designs are weirder too, all of which is more in line with Heinlein’s story, where the satire is less pointed and comedic. You’ll still recognize a lot of the base elements — Johnny’s a perfect athlete with a chiseled jaw who’s ideal for a commanding position in the army. Training and combat are grueling, with most who enlist dying in harrowing ways. The added mechs give it a distinctly ’80s flair, since this was on the tail of Gundam and Robotech, two major franchises, kicking off. Spy x Family Season 3 was confirmed in June 2024, with a new visual featuring Anya and Bond. No release window was specified, however. Spy x Family Code: White was announced alongside Season 2 at Jump Festa ’23 in December 2022. So the timeline from reveal to release can be anywhere from a few months to over a year. Spy x Family Season 3 officially announced, and fans are ready to cry CrunchyrollIn a welcome announcement, Spy x Family Season 3 has finally been confirmed, with a new visual to go with the news. Although Spy x Family Season 3 seemed inevitable considering the franchise’s growing success, actual details were scant. An Anime Extra Mission event in Japan on June 9 cleared everything up by revealing new episodes of the anime show are in production. Almost nothing else was given away. We don’t know who’s working on it, or more importantly, the release window. All that’s been shown by way of a teaser is an adorable poster showing Anya and Bond cuddled up together asleep in her room, lit by several light sources that form a star around her, from character designer Kazuaki Shimada. Given the positive reception and worldwide release of Spy x Family Code: White earlier this year, Season 3 seemed like even more of a sure thing than before. The anime movie had the Yorger family go on a Christmas holiday, a trip that ends with them preserving world peace by stopping an aircraft from crashing into a small town. Now that we’re returning to regular episodes, it means the central narrative will be back on track, and that promises some heartache. “Loid backstory animated gonna make me cry,” says a comment on Reddit. “We will get Loid’s backstory and how did he became a spy, which was quite heartbreaking to say the least. Literally the horrors of war and progression to Operation Strix,” reads another. The third episode of part 2 pushes the plot of Spy x Family forward at an alarming rate. Despite its fast pacing, the story delivery remains very intentional – making for a delightful watch. The terrorist predicament resolves Within the first couple of minutes, the terrorist conflict introduced earlier resolves. The main villain is caught and sent to jail, officially marking Anya’s world-saving success. The speed at which the conflict concludes is a bit alarming, feeling almost rushed. Spy x Family episode 15 doesn’t prioritize the previous terrorist conflict, but much rather focuses on developing the Forger family’s relationships. The story shifts to the Forger family interacting with one another. Despite hiding key parts of their experiences, they bond over their collaborative success in preventing the terrorist attack. While heading home, Anya and Yor celebrate their victories in their head, grinning all the way back. They’re both immensely proud of their heroism. On the other hand, Loid appears drained. Rather than celebrating, he wonders how much longer world peace will remain. These interactions show the family’s growth, and where Spy x Family part 2 truly shines. The story quickly moves on, introducing a new family member. Bondman enters! Spy x Family episode 15 showcases Anya’s growing bond with her new furry companion. From trying to figure out his name, to bringing him to dog parks – and even watching Bondman together, the two grow a beautiful bond. While watching Bondman save the day, Anya thinks of the perfect name for her dog: Bond. Anya effectively names Bond after her favorite hero, who she aspires to be more like in her every day life. In Spy x Family Season 2 Episode 2, Anya and Yor grow even closer after Yor saves her stepdaughter from being abducted by terrorists at the beginning of the episode. Yor enters the scene incredibly angry, threatening the terrorists who she believes to be perverted kidnappers. Though there’s a huge misunderstanding, since Yor lacks knowledge of the national threats of terrorism, she shows up when needed – rescuing Anya from the clutches of evil. This scene showcases Yor’s parental instincts, which she has been unknowingly developing while trying to please the rest of the Forger family. After being rescued, Anya apologizes sincerely to Yor for running off. She realizes she would have been in a terrible circumstance if not for Yor’s interference, displaying Anya’s maturity. Anya is the main hero for Spy x Family season 2 episode 2 Previously in Season 1, Anya first displayed her heroism by saving a drowning child’s life. But she did so by relying on Loid. For episode 14, she saves Loid’s life, and therefore the world. This showcases her character development and independent impact on the story. Though she receives help from Yor and the telepathic dog throughout her adventure, this arc is very much led by Anya. Her novel and fast-paced problem-solving during dire circumstances avoid guaranteed world war, making her the main hero for Spy x Family episode 14. After Anya saves the day, Loid takes over the responsibility of being hero – chasing after the villain around. Fans of the hit anime Spy x Family can get even more excited about the upcoming release of the anime’s second half, as a new trailer has just been released. After the first half of the series began dropping on Crunchyroll in April 2022, the anime has taken the world by storm, and left people wondering what will happen in the series’ second half. Well wonder no longer, as the new trailer, which was released by Toho Animation, features some epic teasing images about the upcoming episodes. What happens in the new Spy x Family Part 2 trailer? The new trailer showcases a lot in a small amount of time. The trailer features a new enemy, played by Hiroki Takahashi, as he embarks to create a terrorist threat, as our leading man Loid and his allies work to stop him. Meanwhile, it seems like Anya is about to get a new dog, which in the show, will likely be equally as exciting. The trailer also previews the new opening theme song “Souvenir” by the band Bump of Chicken. Kazuhiro Furuhashi (of Mobile Suit Gundam UC and Rurouni Kenshin) is directing the anime at Wit Studio and CloverWorks. But fun as that all sounds, what really makes Spy x Family one of the best anime is the gorgeous production from Wit Studio and CloverWorks, mixed with creator Tatsuya Endo’s strong sense of character drama and stakes. Spy x Family has a way of crawling under your skin, and pulling you to the edge of your seat. That’s likely exactly what’s been happening to Netflix users, since Spy x Family Season 1 is in the Netflix Top 10 for Non-English TV Shows. Spy x Family has been inspiring incredible theories since the anime show first aired in 2022. However, with these ranging from far-fetched to plausible, it’s important to look at which ones actually make sense for the story. The basic premise of Spy x Family is a top spy, Loid Forger, on an undercover mission gets married and has to adopt a young child as part of his cover. However, little does he know that his new wife Yor and young daughter Anya have a few secrets of their own. The unconventional family won fans hearts of fans everywhere when they first burst onto our screens, but their unique dynamic also sparked intense speculation. So, is Loid Forger’s mission actually fake? Does Yor know his secret? Let’s take a look at these popular fan theories and find out. 3. Loid and Yor actually know each other’s identities In the anime, Loid and Yor are apparently oblivious to each other’s secret lives. But if they really are a top assassin and super spy, how can they miss all the clues? One of the most popular theories on Reddit is that Loid Forger knows that Yor is an assassin from Garden. Although the characters’ narration don’t support this theory, many Reddit users speculate that this could be a ploy to trick viewers. One of the biggest plot holes in Spy x Family comes from the the two main characters, Loid and Yor. Loid is a superspy who is supposed to be intelligent, organized and methodical, so why doesn’t he question Yor’s superhuman strength and speed? On the other side, Loid Forger is masquerading as a psychiatrist who uses the “concussive recovery method” to defend himself from his rampaging patients. On their first date, as seen in Episode 2, Yor does question why Loid is caught in a gunfight. However, she accepts his cover without question, leading even Loid to wonder whether she’s “incredibly bright or dumb.” In the nature of Yor’s work, she has to be intelligent enough to get away with multiple murders. Therefore, we think that its likely that both of them are at least somewhat aware of each other’s real identities, they’re just turning a blind eye for convenience. Alternatively, the classic notion of love being blind might be at play, blurring their vision to potential red flags as their romance unfolds. 2. Anya is much younger than her believed age In the first episode of Spy x Family, Anya tells Loid that she’s six years old, even though she looks much younger. It’s normal for children to develop at very different rates. However, events throughout the anime have led fans to believe that Loid’s initial assessment was right and she’s actually about four years old. So, why did Anya lie? In the first episode, when Loid is searching for a child to adopt, he is searching for someone who can read, write and pass the entrance exam to prestigious prep school Eden Academy. When he first sees Anya, he assumes that she’s either four or five. However, because Anya has telepathic abilities, loves spy stories, and wants to be adopted, she tells Loid that she’s actually six years old. But why do we think that Anya is lying about her age? Limited information is available about Anya’s past, aside from her name and the fact that she’s been returned to the orphanage multiple times. While it’s entirely plausible that she is genuinely six years old, fans speculate otherwise. Anya’s apparent lack of intelligence, showcased as a source of humor throughout the series, suggests she may be far younger than she claims. And, despite the manga creators not officially confirming this notion, her social difficulties, subpar grades, and less-than-ideal plans all hint at a younger age, which adds an intriguing layer to Anya’s character. 1. Agent Twilight’s mission is fake There’s evidence to suggest that Loid Forger’s top secret mission – Operation Strix – is actually fake. The basic premise of Spy x Family is that Agent Twilight, or Loid Forger, must create a believable family in seven days to get close to politician Donovan Desmond. Initially framed within the context of preserving peace between Westalis and Ostania, the storyline gradually unravels to suggest an alternative motive. It seems that the mission could be less about peace and more about providing Loid with a family of his own. Why do fans think the mission could be fake? One of the reasons is because Donovan Desmond doesn’t appear much in the manga or anime, despite being framed as the ultimate threat. As well as this, its clear in the series that Desmond doesn’t care about interacting with his children. So, why would Loid need to go through all the trouble of pretending to be a family man? Here’s the twist: Loid lost his parents in a war, joined the army, and left everything from his old life behind, including his name, family, and friends. He got so deep into the spy world that he thought having a family was impossible. According to this fan theory, the spy organization WISE might have cooked up this elaborate plan not just for the mission but to help Loid recover from his tough past. They could be aiming to give him a chance at a regular life. As Spy x Family continues to captivate fans around the world, more theories will continue to crop up about the storyline and characters. Spy x Family Episode 25 is the official conclusion for Part II of the series. And unlike many of the filler episodes, the finale marks a momentous occasion for the Spy x Family anime: Loid Forger and Donovan Desmond meet for the very first time. Though there’s little character development in the Forger family for this particular episode, Damian Desmond shines in the finale, finally managing to speak up for himself to his rather intimidating father. Anya’s failed stalking In the beginning of the episode, Anya attempts to follow alongside Damian in hopes of finding more information out regarding his father. But as she does so, Becky assumes she’s attempting to meet Damian’s father in hopes of marriage. As Anya stakes out in hiding, she falls asleep — prompting Becky to bring the child back to her home. If Anya had been at there during Donovan Desmond’s first official debut, she would have been able to read his mind. But in doing so, she may have also blown Loid’s cover alongside blown up the entire cold war. Therefore, the fact that she fell asleep serves the story quite well. And it’s also simply hilarious. Loid meets Donovan Desmond This is the most intense scene in all of Spy x Family, at least in regards to Loid’s cover. Prior to this event, Loid Forger’s cover is always so nonchalant. His professionalism easily wins the trust of everyone around him, resulting in Twilight very casually blending in. But the meeting with Donovan Desmond is completely different. For the first time in the series, Twilight has encountered someone he cannot break or analyze efficiently. Donovan Desmond’s guard is up at all times, and his blank stare shows distrust in every individual that he meets — Spy x Family’s protagonist is no exception. In an attempt to loosen Donovan’s defense, Loid shares a speech regarding family, where he draws inspiration from his familiar relationship with Anya. This draws from his real thoughts, and lacks the superficial fluff he often relies on when undercover. And in doing so, Loid’s words alongside Anya’s little speech prior inspire Damian to speak up to his father. This rant from Damian isn’t one filled with anger of neglect. Instead, it’s purely him telling his father what he’s been up to. From test scores, earning a stella, and even failing a recent language test, these are seemingly small things when compared to the cold war looming over the world. Rather than brushing his son off, as he usually does, Donovan Desmond accepts his son’s words and tells him he’s proud of him. This wouldn’t have been possible without Anya and Loid’s intervention, showing their positive influence despite their ulterior motives and manipulation. The finale for Spy x Family Part II isn’t necessarily ground breaking, but most committed fans wouldn’t want it to be. The series’ strengths lie in its intentional slow pacing, drawing attention to the slice of life moments rather than artificial acceleration of the base premise. So how does Yor hold up? Many of Spy x Family’s episodes lack of narrative progression, often highlighting stories which bear little to no impact on the overall plot. This was portrayed by the last two episodes, which were entertaining but mundane in light of the long term narrative. But in Spy x Family Episode 21, the anime finally shakes things up by debuting a new character, who is sure to make a substantial impact in the story moving forward. The new character fits in wonderfully with the preexisting cast, adding an extra level of enjoyment and shenanigans to the Forger family’s day to day adventures. Nightfall’s secret mission Fiona Frost goes by the code name Nightfall, and is revealed to be a spy who greatly admires Loid Forger, aka Twilight. In order to ensure her mission will go smoothly, she makes a visit to the Forger family’s household, where she’s greeted by Yor. The two interact rather awkwardly, feeling each other out in their own way. Yor’s inner monologue showcase her pure and sweet innocence, while Fiona’s harsh skepticism and demeanor creates a stark contrast between the two. When Anya and Loid enter the room, Fiona Frost’s real intents are revealed: she wants to become Loid’s wife. And in order to do so, she attempts to sabotage Yor, and prove to Loid that Fiona is the only one meant for him. Though she attempts to appear cold, Anya’s mind scan reveals Fiona Frost is really just a girl madly in love with Loid. Watching the unrequited love play out, the viewer can’t help but empathize with the potential home wrecker. Fiona Frost’s character introduction feels incredibly natural. She fits in wonderfully with the preexisting cast, and her presence in the Forger household creates some very hilarious and touching interactions among members of the family. After witnessing Loid smile towards his family, she realizes she has lost. Defeated, Fiona leaves. And Loid, being the gentlemen that he is, runs after her to give her an umbrella, completely oblivious to her feelings towards him. By running after his fellow spy, he opens up the door for her to come back. This is definiltey not the last we’ve seen of Fiona Frost. The ending credits roll, but the episode does not end. Mr. Penguin’s battle scars Anya and Bond watch television together, and witness a penguin get shot. With his dying breath, the penguin tells his comrade to continue fighting for world peace. Anya screams at the television, mourning the death of the penguin. In order to commemorate his death, she sleeps with her stuffed penguin, a cherished gift from Loid. Bond witnesses this, and grows jealous of the stuffed penguin. He believes he’s been replaced, and rips the penguin up. After waking up, Anya sees her favorite stuffed animal torn into shreds. She proclaims her hatred for Bond, and cries over the destroyed gift from her step father. Loid sews the stuffed animal up, and Bond brings Anya some peanuts as a form of apology. This marks their first fight ever, and is one of the few times Anya has ever expressed genuine anger in the series. And the fact her anger is directed to her best friend makes for a heart wrenching scene. The conflict quickly resolves. Spy x Family is an unapologetically slice-of-life series. In other words, each episode often provides what could essentially be an independent storyline, which concludes and begins within the span of the episode. The twentieth episode of Spy x Family continues this trend, providing two separate plots which make minimal impact on the overall progression of the series. Anya adventures around Loid’s hospital As part of a school assignment, Anya must be in a successful person’s workplace and perform interviews. She originally considers asking Yor, but after a quick mind scan realizes Yor’s assassination work is a bit too intense for her. Anya decides to visit Loid’s hospital, where she’s left alone in a room after Loid receives urgent spy-related news. The child roams around the hospital by going through secret passageways she discovered by reading Loid’s mind. The issue with this scene isn’t just that there’s no overall story progression, but that Spy x Family very much doesn’t take itself seriously. Industry professionals are in a room debating the psychiatric cause of hallucinations. And upon hearing Anya’s loud noises in the secret passageway, they all come together and assume there’s a ghost, throwing away their life’s beliefs. Then when Anya turns in a questionably worded report on her father, Loid simply acts charming to smooth everything over. These interactions essentially eliminate the possibility of the Forger family getting caught, even after Anya makes massive screw-ups that would have spelled disaster in any other series. The lack of consequences makes the watch far more casual, but also takes away from the original intense premise laid on in the series. Anya’s top-secret mission In the second half of Spy x family episode 20, Anya plays around with coded messages. She creates these after watching her favorite spy show, and gives them to every possible person she can. The protagonist’s childlike innocence and optimism shine in this portion of the episode. Each character’s response to the secret code reveals a side of their own personality. Her decrepit handwriting causes confusion among all those she hands the coded message to. The only person to crack the code ends up being Franky Franklin, who misunderstands the intent and assumes it’s a love letter from a secret admirer. Anya ends up missing the meeting with Franky Franklin, making for yet another episode where the overall story progression goes nowhere, which has become rather characteristic of the series at this point, for better and for worse. George’s embarrassing misunderstanding Introduced in Spy x Family episode 19 is George, one of Damian’s and Anya’s classmates. According to the child, his father’s company is going bankrupt, and he expects to be expelled from school after becoming homeless. George chooses to blame Damian, and seeks revenge. Anya prevents his attempts to bring Damian down with him, as she needs Damian in the school to complete her own mission of saving the world. The side character then reveals he will soon be leaving Eden Academy, which forces those around him to treat him well on his last day. After an eventful final day at school, George returns home only to learn his father’s company was acquired, and that his father gets to keep his job. George’s life is essentially unphased, and he returns to school the very next day. Nothing substantial occurs during this scene. Outside of Anya’s small moments of hilarity, this first story does little to add color to the preexisting characters in Spy X Family, and instead highlights a character we will likely never see again. Anya’s forgotten items The Forger family start their morning routine, beginining with Anya oversleeping and eating breakfast with the rest of her family. After Anya leaves for school, Yor realizes her step-daughter forgot her gym uniform, prompting Yor to sneak around Eden Academy. Yor parkours through the city, showing off her super-human abilities. Her swift movements are easily the action highlights for the episode, providing the viewers a jump of adrenaline with each masterful leap. Upon reaching Eden Academy, the wife of the Forger family undergoes numerous trials, testing her quick thinking and wit. She manages to deliver the uniform to Anya successfully, only to find out her daughter didn’t need her uniform to begin with. This moment highlights Yor’s blissful ignorance alongside her growing sense of responsibility for her child. And Loid’s response to Yor’s actions show off his growing empathy. Unlike the previous story, this portion of Spy x Family episode 19 focuses on a fan favorite character, showcasing some slight character growth. But as previously mentioned, the events in this episode have little to no impact on the overall story progression, decreasing the episode’s relevance while increasing appeal for casual viewers. Spy x Family episode 18 review: Anya’s first midterm exam Crunchy Roll and ShueishaSpy x Family episode 18 centers around Anya’s first midterm exam, which she must pass in order for Operation Strix to continue smoothly. The newest episode of Spy x Family part 2 continues following Anya, the main protagonist of the series. She’s back in school, and has two weeks left to prepare for her very first midterm exam. During her preparation, the Forger family help the child study in their own unique ways. Yor goes as far as to call Yuri to help tutor her step-daughter. This particular episode’s humorous execution shines brightly, even when compared with the other episodes in part 2, making for an incredibly uplifting and light viewing experience. A quick spoiler warning below for Spy x Family episode 18! Anya can’t use her powers Anya’s original diabolical plan was to cheat by copying Damian’s answers, and thereby win herself a Stella. But her plans are trashed when she realizes the exam occurs on an eclipse, which she reveals is the one time she’s not able to use her telepathic abilities. This forces Anya to stand on her own two legs. She rolls up her sleeves, and very reluctantly begins studying after attempting to avoid it as long as possible. Her facial expressions reflect the child’s disdain for studying. Anya’s disdain for studying makes her a very relatable character, as every student has faced such a struggle. Despite hating studying and not having access to her signature telepathic abilities, the protagonist tackles the dilemma head on without taking any shortcuts, and without relying on anyone else. The Forger family’s failed attempt to help Yor calls in Yuri to help tutor Anya, and Loid breaks into the school to change his daughter’s answers. Though she didn’t end up requiring their intervention, since she passed the midterm on her own, these scenes provide heartwarming and hilarious interactions. While attempting to teach Anya, Yuri reveals that all the work he put in throughout his entire life was because he wanted to make the world a better place for his sister. Since he’s seen technically as an antagonist in Spy x Family, Yuri’s adorable family connected motivation make him nearly impossible to hate. As for Loid, he puts on a disguise and breaks into the academy. To his surprise, he discovers another undercover spy, who does a terrible job. He goes by the name of Daybreak, and desires to become Twilight’s rival. Spy x Family episode 17 covers three mini-character arcs. These stories help display the characters’ various personalities and quirks. Once again, the series showcases its masterful handling of the slice-of-life genre. It covers delightful day-to-day stories, which conclude within the episode. Anya’s diabolical plan to win Damian’s affection Spy x Family episode 17 begins with Anya’s return back to her everyday school life. During her class time, Anya has one most immediate objective: befriend Damian Desmond. In order to grow closer with her classmate, the protagonist hatches a diabolical plan – which quickly goes awry. She attempts to help Damian create an art project, after which Damian would have to be thankful for Anya’s kind efforts. But in doing so, Anya practically destroys Damian’s project, creating an incredibly pitiful-looking animal. The second son to the dictator lashes out at Anya. To his surprise, his art piece won the first place award – yet he still doesn’t give Anya the satisfaction or gratification she desires. This section’s pacing is well-handled. Anya’s friendship with Damian directly relates to the biggest plot of the Spy x Family part two, but the mission for the episode creates a very concise goal to be achieved. Though Anya succeeded in her goal for Spy x Family episode 17, Damian’s treatment makes her believe she failed miserably. By beginning with Anya’s story, the episode moves the plot a significant deal forward, all the while not introducing any massive new arcs. Loid’s secret meeting During an intel trade, Loid and Fullmetal Lady, the Handler, meet up. Nothing of incredible substance occurs during this scene, but the inner thoughts of both characters are shared. Both are very cautious when meeting up, signaling one another, and checking for stalkers. Risking their lives for a normal get-together, the two trade information. When asked to inform her on Operation Strix, the save the world mission which serves as the base premise for the entire series, Loid replies with a nonsensical answer. “She can now jump rope five times in a row.” Fullmetal Lady’s most immediate thought is ‘what in the world is he on about?’ These interactions show both characters’ more human sides, as their inner thoughts during these routine intense meet-ups are shown. When it gets down to business, the two communicate in a very professional manner. Their serious demeanors play contrast with their thoughts, which are quite entertaining. Yuri’s superpower This scene occurs after the ending song and takes up only a small portion of the episode. It reveals Yuri and Yor as children. Yor cooks, then feeds her little brother her homemade food. Yuri eats the food, then pukes. Despite the liquids spewing out of his mouth, the child smiles brightly. “Sis you’re such an amazing cook, I bet you can get married in no time!” Yuri told his sister after a filling meal. Embarrassed, the future assassin slaps her little brother across the face, sending him flying across the room. The first highlights Yor Forger’s daunting new task, and the other depicts Franky Franklin’s quest for love. In the previous episode, the last big arc of the series concluded following the Forger family successfully managing to avoid a world war. Rather than introducing the next major plot point, Spy x Family episode 16, the fourth episode of Spy x Family part 2, serves as filler. Despite not providing any new story elements, Spy x Family episode 16 effectively introduces and concludes two separate side stories, while continuing to showcase the series’ charms. The first half of the episode follows Yor Forger on her daunting task, while the second half follows Franky Franklin. To watch Spy x Family episode 16, check out Crunchyroll. A slight spoiler warning below for Spy x Family! Yor’s secret In the beginning of the episode, Yor sneaks around, hiding a secret from her family. Her fingers are cut up, and she carries what looks like a bag with blood in it. The episode then reveals she had been taking cooking classes from Camilla, her coworker. Yuri, Yor’s brother, joins in as well, serving as the taste tester for his sister’s questionable dishes. Spy x Family episode 16 takes this opportunity to provide some background for the siblings while also providing color to Camilla’s character. Watching Yor and her brother’s family dynamic is an absolute joy, and seeing Camilla as a character who isn’t just a complete bully makes her far more tolerable. Their combined charms and personality quirks make for an entertaining scene. After the class, when Yor successfully manages to cook and feed the rest of the Forger family, her short narrative is concluded. Spy x Family part 2 moves onto the next side story. Franky’s dating life The latter half of the Spy x Family episode 16 focuses on Franky, Loid’s colleague, and his attempt to find love. Desperate for help, he calls for Loid Forger’s advice. The two friends sit at a restaurant, planning Franky’s approach. After asking out the girl of interest, Franky runs into the Forger family. He tells them that he got rejected, but attempts to play it off cool. Seeing his colleague in distress, Loid leaves Anya in Yor’s care, and buys Franky some drinks at a bar. This particular side story highlights the relationship between Franky and Loid, who have become close friends through their shared endeavors. The pacing and interactions in this latter half of the episode feel less substantial than Yor’s cooking side story. Since Franky and Loid regularly interact – unlike Yuri and Yor – the short connection of characters doesn’t have the same depth. Although there is little main story progression, Spy x Family episode 16 is still an entertaining watch. The episode cements the series’ strength in its genre: slice of life. Spy x Family Code: White review – Anime caper that’s worthy of True Lies Spy x Family has always played like a True Lies TV show with more madcap elements, and the new anime movie makes that comparison even truer in wholly entertaining fashion. In Spy x Family Code: White, the Forger family attempt to take a peaceful overnight getaway. As usual, it’s in service of Loid’s mission of getting closer to his six-year-old adopted daughter Anya’s principal, the target in Operation Strix, on which the entire Spy x Family premise pivots. He’s been threatened with losing the assignment, and thus the second life he’s built with Yor, his assassin wife, and their dog, Bond. Over the course of the anime show’s two seasons so far, we’ve seen Loid gradually come to care for his family as more than mere cover, and Code: White deepens those bonds. Spy x Family Code: White re-introduces the cast A preamble establishes everything for newbies among the audience, a safe bet since Anya’s a telepath and Bond can see the future. One being a child and the other a dog means Spy x Family only becomes funnier; both are as likely to cause more trouble as they are to fix anything. Case in point: Anya incidentally threatening national security by eating a delicious chocolate treat. She becomes the subject of a military manhunt that inevitably spurs Loid and Yor to take up arms as well. The timing is especially unfortunate since their relationship is under strain due to suspicions of infidelity. Screenplay writer Ichirō Ōkouchi also oversaw Season 2 of the TV series, and his finesse in balancing the intermingling of personal and broader stakes carries a particular confidence. Likewise the direction from Takashi Katagiri, who takes every opportunity to display the budget and scale of this cinematic outing, without ever losing touch with the foundation of a young family figuring life out. Despite a burgeoning war, Anya’s sudden disappearance causes the most upset, invigorating the ensuing shoot-outs and fiery showdowns. Production houses Wit Studio and CloverWorks are in their element with Loid and Yor, both of whom can take down multiple opponents on a whim. Each gets several moments to shine, in distinct settings that highlight their efficiency and ruthlessness. Spy x Family Code: White embraces laughs and thrills Spy x Family has a somewhat precarious narrative due to two of the lead characters being trained killers. Our empathy should come with the awareness of what they’re capable of, and Code: White establishes that effectively, framing them as heroes thanks to a cartoonish baddie, a sociopathic general who’s all too eager to torture young prisoners. It’s a pulpy setup, and one that takes shape around halfway through when the subplots converge. This isn’t a surprising thriller in any of the twists and turns, but through its execution. A hostage situation becomes a gorgeously rendered, utterly delirious daydream whose subject matter left me aghast and giggling. More than anything else, Spy x Family Code: White is a comedy. Occasionally a caper, sometimes a rom-com, with excursions into action and more fanciful storytelling, before reverting to heartfelt familial love. That’s what’s made this franchise such a hit in manga and on television, and it translates staggeringly well to the big screen. Frigis, the town they visit, is a snowy delight full of winter markets and local cuisine. There’s a spinoff waiting to happen between Bond and Anya and the silly trouble they get into, and Yor’s insecurities over partnership and motherhood make her perhaps the most relatable hired gun this side of Bill Hader’s Barry. Spy x Family Code: White review verdict: 4/5 It all coalesces in Spy x Family Code: White for a highly entertaining watch. Knowledgeable fans may find some frustration in all the explanations, but it’s a worthwhile sacrifice to widen the Forger family’s audience. One could quibble that Yor’s slightly underdone subplot about seeing Loid with another woman, and the status quo remains largely unchanged. But that leaves some intrigue for Spy x Family Season 3, and when the foundation is still this enjoyable, there’s no need to alter course just yet. Yes, Spy x Family Code: White has a small scene after the credits are finished rolling. The short scene arrives after the credits have fully finished, rather than mid-credits like you might be accustomed to with Marvel movies. Of course, waiting through the credits is hardly a chore when you have music by composers Shuhei Mutsuki and Makoto Miyazaki as well as (K)now Name to listen to. Like the rest of the soundtrack, the closing credits are a fun, sprightly listen, with an ending theme befitting the popular franchise. What is the Spy x Family Code: White post-credits scene? In the post-credits scene, Franky Franklin reappears after being sent on a mission to find cherry liqueur. While the rest of the story happened and the family sourced some on their own, he managed to procure a bottle. Alas, Loid hasn’t been in touch, leaving Franky standing in the street at their rendezvous point freezing, waiting for his colleague who’s never coming. Oh dear! It ends the film with a nice laugh, setting up another small thread to be addressed in the future. A lot goes down in the film, between Anya threatening world peace, Loid fighting to keep his family intact, and Yor becoming anxious about his dedication. The only one who isn’t on edge is Bond! The last act presents them with challenges they can only overcome together. So, here’s how they do that, what’s in the Spy x Family Code: White post credits scene, and what’s coming next. Warning: spoilers ahead! What happens in the Spy x Family Code: White ending? The ending of Spy x Family Code: White has Loid and Yor managing to avoid disaster, while finally getting all the ingredients they need for Anya’s meremere. Alas, the school’s cooking competition is postponed, spurring another family trip, but this time to somewhere with sunny weather for a smoother adventure. Before that, though, Loid has a shoot out with Colonel Snidel on the bridge of his airship. Loid eventually overcomes the Colonel and his men, freeing Anya from where she was trapped in the process. Meanwhile, Yor handles Type F, an experimental supersoldier the Colonel deploys to handled intruders. It’s a close fight, but Yor manages to outsmart Type F using the oily lipstick Loid bought her. Afterward, the ship in a fiery mess, Loid, Anya and Yor realize they’re about to crash land into an oncoming town. They grab the steering wheel together, hoping to push the vessel towards a neighboring lake. They manage it just in time, and as they breathe a sigh of relief, Anya coughs up the microfilm that was thought to be swallowed. Instead it was just lodged in her teeth! Giving that back to Sylvia allows Loid to continue with Operation Strix and his adopted family, though some less than flattering pictures involving his replacement-to-be helped as well. Anya starts to participate in her class cooking contest, but a kitchen mishap leads to the whole thing being postponed. The new time means the vice principal will be deciding who wins, prompting another excursion for special ingredients, and the Forger family take a sun holiday we don’t get to see. Then, credits. What happens in the Spy x Family Code: White post credits scene? After the credits, we’re treated to a small scene focused on poor Franky Franklin. An ever reliable contact for Loid, he manages to track down cherry liqueur, and makes his way to Frigis to hand it over. The problem is the Forgers are now miles away, either dealing with the Colonel on the airship, or getting home after the crash. Either way, Franky is out of luck and freezing. At least he has some liquor to keep him warm! Is Spy x Family Code: White canon? Officially, Spy x Family Code: White isn’t canon, so nothing is fundamentally altered in the movie. None of the main characters die, nor is Operation Strix changed in any real way. We may still get references to these events, though. The cooking contest remains a possible way for Anya to earn a Stella, and since Loid possibly getting reassigned is part of the plot, we may hear about this as a previous close shave for him. Code: White arrived amid a huge year for anime on the silver screen. Haikyuu!! The Dumpster Battle, My Hero Academia: You’re Next, Demon Slayer: To The Hashira Training, Blue Lock: The Movie – Episode Nagi; many properties have made their way into multiplexes in 2024. Spy x Family could’ve been drowned out, but instead the Forgers proved they’re more than meets the eye – not bad for a show with only two seasons. Like many anime films that come from larger properties, the canonicity of Code: White is debatable. Ultimately, the status quo isn’t really shifted, but that doesn’t stop the picture being fun or worth watching. What’s more, we’re none the wiser about when Spy x Family Season 3 might arrive, so for now, this feature-length romp is the best way to catch up with Anya, Yor, and of course, Bond. One thing leads to another and suddenly world peace hangs in the balance. Classic! At time of writing, Spy x Family Code: White has garnered a huge 96% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes. That comfortably places the film within the upper echelon of movies released in 2024 so far. Spy x Family anime leads to major boost in manga sales CrunchyrollThe Spy x Family anime has taken the viewing world by storm, and now it’s impacting the reading world too. Spy x Family is the most popular anime out there right now, rising high in the ranks on MyAnimeList despite only releasing in early April. The anime, which follows a spy, an assassin, and a telepathic child who form a family as part of their cover, has led to fans itching to find out what happens next. Thankfully, this information is readily available, as the anime is based on a manga series of the same name. And while the manga was already doing relatively well, the new series’ popularity has led to manga sales increasing tenfold. Spy x Family manga sales nearly double Before the series began, the manga, which was created by Tatsuya Endo, had 12.5 million copies circulating. But according to Shueisha manga editor Shihei Lin, in the short two-month span that the series has been out, sale trajectories have almost doubled, reaching more than 21 million. That means that more than 8.5 million copies have been put into circulation within less than two months, and the numbers don’t seem to be slowing down. The series is only on Episode 8, and it has been scheduled that there will be 25 episodes in total, split into two parts. As this first part of the show ends, and the second part begins later in 2022, more fans will inevitably want to buy the manga volumes. On top of that, the manga’s serialization in Shonen Jump+ has now reached more than 400 million views online. Whether this growing popularity of the manga will affect the popularity of the show is yet to be seen, but the franchise clearly doesn’t seem to be giving up its throne in the anime world just yet.

Spy x Family Code: White, the first feature film from the Spy x Family franchise, debuted at #1 in the Japanese Box Office in its opening weekend. Premiering on December 22, 2023, the film managed to surpass 1bn yen ($8.6mn USD) over the three-day Christmas weekend. This makes it the third highest among Japanese anime films released in 2023, behind Detective Conan: Black Iron Submarine (3bn yen) and Studio Ghibli’s The Boy and the Heron (1.6bn yen). Based on the hit manga and anime series, this original film has proved popular with Spy x Family fans. So, let’s take a closer look. What’s Spy x Family Code: White about? Supervised by the manga creator Tatsuya Endo and co-produced by WIT Studio and CloverWorks, the Spy x Family film follows the premise of the original series. Crunchyroll, which will screen the new film internationally in 2024 describes the story as follows: “He’s a spy. She’s an assassin. Together, Loid and Yor keep their double lives to themselves while pretending to be the perfect family. But, of course, things can never be too easy for him as his adopted daughter Anya accidentally gets involved and triggers events that threaten world peace. Can Loid stop them before it’s too late? The fan reactions are in Spy x Family Code: White topped the Japanese Box Office charts for the Christmas weekend, ahead of Disney’s Wish, a live-action adaptation of I Wish I Could Meet You Again on the Hill Where That Flower Blooms, and Hollywood Blockbuster Wonka. With an IMDb rating of 9.4/10 from a total of 72 reviews at the time of this article’s writing, things look like they’ll be getting bigger and better for the Spy x Family franchise. “The movie was cute and light fun!” wrote one review on December 23. ‘Live-action’ Spirited Away ripped apart by Studio Ghibli fans Toho/LiberStudio Ghibli fans are banding together to tear down and shun a live-action version of Spirited Away made by AI. Every anime fan knows of Spirited Away and the Studio Ghibli library of movies; they’re full of delightful, emotional, and – most importantly – beautifully animated films. The man behind them, Hayao Miyazaki, is not just famous for his work but also his ethics towards animation; his latest film, The Boy and the Heron, can twist its meaning to an autobiographical sense. Artificial intelligence is controversial, to say the least; stealing work from artists and writers alike to rush out cheap and terrible imitations is scummy enough. However, trying to use it to create a new version of a beloved animated film is frankly sacrilegious against animation. Fans rip into AI ‘live-action’ Spirited Away Studio Ghibli films revel in being outstanding art pieces full of symbolism and more profound meaning while still being memorable movies to watch on the surface level. So, an AI trying to replicate, possibly the most human animation in the industry, will only be met with hostility. When translated, the original post says, “The Spirited Away universe generated by an AI” and contains incredibly drab renders of a live-action Spirited Away with generated subjects barely looking like their animated counterparts. Even the adorable soot sprites look just terrible and gross. Anyone who knows Hayao Miyazaki knows of his extremely strict worldview and opinions of animation as an art form to the degree that it becomes almost philosophical. So, the likelihood of him actually hunting down the person who made this with a bow and arrow is doubtful but not totally out of the realm of possibility. “If Hayao Miyazaki sees this he will probably tell you that you are insulting life itself,” one user tweeted. “Putting AI to generate images based on the masterpiece that is #Spiritedaway’s artwork must be one of the very few things that really made me angry! This is disrespectful to the hard work of #HayaoMiyazaki and Studio #Ghibli. This is so wrong,” another wrote. Miyazaki stands very strongly behind his projects, going as far as threatening disgraced film producer Harvey Weinstein by sending him a samurai sword with a note saying “No cuts” after the producer demanded they cut the runtime on Princess Mononoke from 135 minutes down to 90 minutes. Whether the sword made an impact or not, Princess Mononoke stands proudly at a long runtime and is a masterful piece of animation.

Spirited Away: Hayao Miyazaki reveals truth behind No Face after 23 years NetflixSpirited Away director Hayao Miyazaki has finally revealed one of the movie’s biggest mysteries – the truth of No Face. Spirited Away is a Studio Ghibli classic that was released in 2001 and still stands among one of the greatest anime ever. However, despite the young protagonist and the Yokai theme, the movie is far from childish. In fact, one of the biggest beauties of this movie is its complexity and the various mysteries. The story is about Chihiro, whose parents are turned into pigs, and she then wanders into the world of Yokai to find a way to save them. However, the world is scarier than she realizes since it’s ruled by a witch who turned those who disobey her into animals. One of the main mysteries that fans still think about is No Face’s identity. After all, they are somewhat important to the story, and no one seems to know who they really are. Now, Hayao Miyazaki has opened up about the strange character. Hayao Miyazaki addresses No Face mystery in Spirited Away? As per Comic Book, the update comes from Nippon TV. The network hosts a primetime movie block each Friday called Kinyo Roadshow, with Spirited Away taking the first slot of 2024. During the event, Nippon TV live-tweeted details about the film, including a tidbit from Miyazaki that few knew about. According to Miyazaki’s post, “There are many people like No Face in our midst… it’s the type of person who wants to latch on to others but doesn’t have a sense of themselves. They are everywhere.” Over two decades ago, Hayao Miyazaki claimed that the identity of No Face from Spirited Away is much bigger than fans realize. The character has no specific identity. Instead, they’re simply an entity who has lost their sense of self. They adapt to new personalities depending on the situation, which is why No Face is so unpredictable in the movie. Initially, No Face gifts others gold to win their approval, but their ego inflates soon after. Later, they meet Chihiro and adapt her personality. By the end of the movie, they decide to live out their life with Zeniba.

Anime fans call for remake of classic show for 20th anniversary CrunchyrollRemakes are relatively common within anime. Dragon Ball Z Kai and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood are two major examples. Fans are hoping for another classic series to get the treatment — Soul Eater. Premiering in 2008, Soul Eater was a hit anime show about a school, run by Death, for people with the ability to become supernatural weapons, and those with the talents to use said weapons properly. It’s a slightly odd, very gothic shonen anime that’s incredibly charming if you love morbid cartoons. Based on Atsushi Ohkubo’s manga, Soul Eater’s production still holds up, but a change to the ending in the anime soured the whole project for some fans. Now that we’re coming up on the 20th anniversary of the manga, fans are hopeful for some form of remake. “Soul Eater: Resonance,” says one fan on Reddit. “It would be my dream come true.” Others agree, but are keeping their hopes in check: “It still holds a special place in my heart but it’s not very likely.” Ironically, fans are reluctant to buy into the idea because the original, produced by Studio Bones, is so distinct visually. ” I don’t think any current studio can do justice to Soul Eater. The animation was so unique and the consistent top-notch quality,” says one fan. Another posits that a legacy sequel of sorts would be the better option. “Honestly if they did this I’d prefer them to do what Blue Exorcist and Black Butler did and just pretend the non-canon stuff didn’t happen and continue on from where it diverged,” says another comment. “I know it would make things confusing for newcomers, but I really can’t see a full remake being anything other than largely inferior.” That’s a creative option, and one that’s been employed by the aforementioned, as well as Bleach, which returned with Thousand-Year Blood War in 2022, a decade after the anime otherwise concluded. When the Moustache Moron gives the order to unleash all the missiles, the trailer gives us a look into how Sonic is taking in the moment. While most of the world was seeing one of the only highlights of the trailer, anime fans were seeing a call back to a similarly perilous moment in a hero’s journey. The long-anticipated Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is finally ready to grace the big screen. Telling the tale of Shadow, the movie will show Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails trying to defeat their new mysterious enemy and save the planet. The film is seeing the return of Ben Schwartz, Idris Elba, and Colleen O’Shaughnessey as the main trio. Jim Carrey is also coming back, this time for a double role as Dr. Ivo Robotnik and Gerald Robotnik. Most excitingly, Keanu Reeves has joined the cast as Shadow. But Reeves isn’t the only iconic voice behind the villain. René García, who played Vegeta in Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super in the Latin American Spanish dub, has also been cast as Shadow’s Spanish voice actor. This creates an intriguing connection between the two legendary franchises as well as the characters. While we know Vegeta as a part of the Z Fighters now, he started his adventure on Earth as an antagonist. Over time, he’s cemented his role as the good guy (mostly), but there’s enough darkness inside him. So, we can safely say that García will do Shadow justice and bring out his gritty villainous side. Fans certainly think so as they’re losing their minds over having Vegeta’s voice for Shadow. However, try and explain that to fans on the internet, where reason gets shoved aside pretty quick a lot of the time. “We live in a world of toxic narcissism and weebs are by far the worst,” one commenter states. The Reddit thread on the topic became a discussion on negative attitudes held by anime fans around the world. “Obviously nobody is happy with skipping a week of content, not the fans but also not the studio,” adds another comment. “They wouldn’t do it just to spite their fans, they will have their reasons for it. And since they bought the time slot for Japanese TV, they had to air something, which was a recap episode. If you don’t like it, then just don’t watch it.” Wise words. In the same interview, Kaneko mentions that Cerberus was nearly the end for Sung, so it’s better to come back rejuvenated and well stocked in his inventory. To protect the humanity, the brave firefighter decided to quit his job. With his physical prowess, he ended up becoming one of the top-rank hunters in Korea. However, things go south when in a dungeon raid, Hwan gets captured by the enemies, making everyone believe that he’s dead. However, he does return to the manga later on, but this time with a different motive. During his time in the Dungeon, he was found by the Rulers and they decided to free him only if he kills the new Shadow Monarch. However, little did Sung II Hwan know that the new Shadow Monarch was his son, Sung Jin-Woo. So, those people sent a father on a mission to kill his kin. However, as soon as Sung II Hwan learns about Jin-Woo, he decides to fight alongside his son. For a while, Sung II Hwan supports Jin-Woo from the shadows and hides his identity from Jin-Woo. But later on, Sung II Hwan does come out in the open, making for a heartfelt reunion with his son. Sung Jin-Woo and his family spent most of their lives in poverty, surviving on pennies earned by Jin-Woo on his Dungeon missions. However, things would have been different if Sung II Hwan wasn’t captured ten years ago. Considering how strong Sung II Hwan is, he would have earned a lot of money for his family. That being said, Sung II Hwan never became a Hunter to earn money or get rich. He went through all that to become stronger so that he could protect the world where his family lives. So, it’s hard to say if things would have been different for Jin-Woo if his father had been around. Sung II Hwan’s powers and abilities Sung II Hwan started showcasing his powers during the final acts of Solo Leveling, making us finally realize his true potential. Strength Like every other Hunter, Sung II Hwan possesses immense strength, allowing him to send anyone flying with a single punch. This was evident from Sung II Hwan’s encounter with Hwang Dongsoo — Jin-Woo’s father dominated the S-Class Hunter without even breaking a sweat. Stealth Apart from the physical strength, Sung II Hwan also boasts incredible stealth. He uses his environment to conceal his presence, which is how he is able to stay hidden from Jin-Woo for this long. Speed Sung II Hwan’s strength doesn’t affect his speed. Apparently, everyone learns that these Rules are Commandments of the “God.” Suddenly, the door gets shut, and when one of the hunters tries to leave, he gets killed by a statue. That’s when everyone learns they are about to get a near-death experience in the dungeon. Several hunters start dying at the hands of the statues. Jin-Woo decodes the commandments of god and helps his fellow hunters to survive the whole ordeal. The ones who don’t listen to him die, and at last, Jin-Woo decides to sacrifice himself to help the remaining ones, especially Joohe. When the episode ends, we see “Courage of the Weak” written on the screen. It confirms that God has granted the ‘System’ to Jin-Woo. That’s how this ‘God’ entity becomes relevant to Jin-Woo’s journey. So, who exactly who is he? The Statue Of God Explained The statue that grants Sung Jin-Woo the power of “The System” is the puppet of the Architect. The Architect is a supernatural being who agrees to find a human vessel for Ashborn, the Shadow Monarch. The Statue that Jin-Woo sees in the Dungeon is the replica of the Absolute Being. This Statue does the Architect’s bidding and tests every human who steps into this Dungeon. Over the years, the Architect tests several humans to find a perfect vessel for Ashborn, and he eventually comes across Jin-Woo, who passes the Architect’s every test. Who is the Absolute Being and Ashborn? Absolute Being is the vital force that created Monarchs out of the darkness and Rulers out of the light when only these two elements existed. The former were created to destroy the entire human race while the latter were created so that they could save humanity. To be precise, despite being a God, the Absolute Being was a self-centered individual who did everything for his entertainment. However, when the Rulers approached requesting immense power to eradicate the Monarchs, the Absolute Being didn’t even respond. The Rulers understood that the Absolute Being didn’t want the war to end as he was happy seeing the chaos around him. They also realize that the situation will only get worse until they find a way to defeat the Absolute Being. So, every Ruler, except Ashborn, decides to kill the ‘God’ and put an end to all the bloodshed. Ashborn, being the strongest of all tried to oppose his own race but he couldn’t do anything. Absolute Being gets killed by the Rulers and when Ashborn gets resurrected as the Shadow Monarch, he finds the God’s corpse on the throne but not in good shape, of course. So, you could say that Jin-Woo is the Absolute Being’s chosen warrior, who eventually becomes Ashborn’s vessel to fight on God’s behalf. Thanks to the potent RPG-like interface that helps him level up with each successful quest. The System The System lets Sung Jin-Woo keep track of the status of his physical/mental health, energy, necromancy, and more. He can also stay aware of how much inventory he is left with, how much of his powers have been upgraded or what are his achievements. Shadows Sung Jin-Woo also has the potential to turn the defeated opponents into his allies (known as Shadows), who help him in the battles using the powers that they had before getting knocked down. Solo Leveling voice actor speaks up against threats over Episode 12 CrunchyrollSolo Leveling voice actor Aleks Le is finally speaking up against the threatening comments from fans over Episode 12. Solo Leveling enjoyed massive success over its first season, with a second confirmed before it had even finished. The season finale, Episode 12, was particularly well-received by fans. However, some fans seemed to have been so nervous or a little too excited about a particular scene in Episode 12 that they sent threatening comments to the protagonist’s voice actor. Aleks Le, a renowned voice actor who voices Sung Jinwoo in the English-language version, recently spoke out against the threat comments on his TikTok account. The voice actor revealed how he got thousands of threatening messages from Solo Leveling viewers, bullying him to do the “arise” scene “correctly”. He also showed some of the actual comments sent by fans and expressed his feeling about this matter. Le clarified that while he understood the sentiment of fans behind the famous “Arise” scene, sending the voice actor threats is not the way to go about it. He was nervous about the highly anticipated scene too. The comments directed towards Le were hurtful and offensive which is why he saw it prudent to publicly speak up against it. Sung Jinwoo is the One In the first episode, Sung Jinwoo sacrifices himself to save what remains of a group of heroes after they get trapped in a terrifying dungeon where enormous stone gods run through anyone who isn’t clever enough to understand their patterns. Sung was just smart enough to see through the gods’ attacks but at the expense of his own body. Miraculously, he wakes up in hospital after being rescued, with no injuries and a bizarre interface only he can see. Some sort of system has chosen him, granting him the ability to level up his rank by completing different quests. Once he begins to understand his newfound strength, he starts tackling more dangerous and elaborate enemies. But then creator Chugong uses it all in a distinct fashion, by incorporating a fantastical twist. The Matrix, but make it DnD Dungeons and Dragons is a pivotal touchstone, since the encroaching enemies mostly manifest as rudimentary monsters like goblins, serpents, and werewolves. They appear through inexplicable gates that have been opening, seemingly at random, for years, with certain people having powers that allow them to enter the portals, kill the boss, and collect loot. It puts a fun twist on the man vs. machine paradigm, by giving the machine a creative streak in the enemies and obstacles it creates. Sung can purchase potions in a store and acquire keys from different bosses, all giving it the flair of a DnD session — just one that’s deeply meta and gone totally awry. (Is there any other kind?) Solo Leveling has the air of an episode of The Animatrix, and you can imagine the first two episodes making a condensed short: a gaggle of adventurers get lost, find some horrendous glitch, one survives with a mysterious tether to the simulation’s code. Chugong’s manhwa massages and contorts the concept using fantasy elements to make a story that requires more space. The symbiosis of DnD and The Matrix is remarkably fluid. Sung’s progression is clearly signposted, though we’re still limited to the knowledge he’s presented, and we have a clear sense of scaling for the enemies and stages he has to face. Solo Leveling provides a version of The One without the narrative crutches of uploading skills to one’s mind on a whim. This is not to criticize The Matrix; I consider it as close to a perfect action movie as we have, and learning new skills coming in literal patches is an ingenious way to manufacture huge scenes, but I’m left wondering what it’s like for people who don’t have a Morpheus or Trinity. A glitch in the simulation There are those whose glitching arrives without context, pushing them to figure out what they can do by throwing themselves into impossible scenarios. What was it like for the first person in The Matrix to realize they could jump from high-rise to high-rise? I’m willing to bet it was a shock to any agents when their target was able to do kung fu after just running around a corner. We get these moments in Solo Leveling. The foolhardy exploration and over-exertion, the feeling of fear and excitement. The sense of progression couched in lingering unanswered questions. Whatever’s going on, Sung has no shepherd. There’s not even a burning bush, just some menus logging his progression and telling him what’s next. Sung’s choices have urgency because he’s getting stronger but still struggles when he brushes against his limits. His clash with Cerberus was so hard fought that he decided to walk away and grind before moving on to the next level. He might have seen the face of God, but his blessing doesn’t make him immune to his own humanity. He can die, and given he’s on his own most of the time, he will if he isn’t careful. No matter how powerful he becomes, he still has those E-level instincts. That’s the trail I’ve long desired to see The Matrix follow. Where a human being sees all the code, but has to learn the appropriate passages to ascend. The throughline of a Christ figure who has no apostles and no messiah, and whose scripture is popups for new quests and skill points. Whose story comes with goofy candor and undiminished self-belief. It’s definitely not as flashy as The Matrix, but I feel like I understand Sung more than Neo. Maybe he’s the One I’ve been waiting for.

It shows Jinwoo taking on several villains in a snowy setting, the backdrop for the Red Gate Arc. In particular, we get a good look at Baruka, a vicious ice elf who tests Jinwoo’s skills in every way. Their eventual fight could very be the whole season’s highlight. The fact that the hero of Solo Leveling can even tackle an opponent like Cerberus in Episode 7 is a testament to his journey in the anime show so far. From the weedy E-class hero in the first episode to now, it’s been an incredible transformation, with Sung becoming a resourceful warrior who can handle major stand-offs. Fighting Cerberus lasts an entire episode, as opposed to the manwha where it’s mostly glossed over. It’s a gruelling, satisfying ordeal where Sung is pushed to his limits, having to purchase items mid-battle for the first time and utilize every trick in his arsenal. He’s victorious in the end, and his strategy was strong than you might have thought. Sung Jinwoo used a special ability to defeat Cerberus in Solo Leveling After killing two of the three heads of Cerberus, Sung Jinwoo was left with one that’s extremely ferocious. He lets himself get bitten to be closer to the creature, before the eye multiple times, causing death. Of course, all those stab wounds did substantial damage, but the real killer here was his blade’s Drain ability. Every time he successfully stabs something with that dagger, they’re left with a lingering effect that gradually takes away their HP. Multiple stab wounds stack the power, until all the target’s lifeforce is sucked away. In the manwha, Sung kills Cerberus in a slightly more grotesque fashion, by stabbing the gigantic canine at the base of its neck, causing the three heads to drown from blood flowing into their lungs. Honestly, think I prefer the anime show on this – we got an awesome set-piece, and it didn’t seem so malicious on Sung’s behalf. Some fans on Reddit believe the anime utilizes some plot armor – where the main character survives because the creator needs them to, so they win by miraculous means – and there’s merit to that argument. But plot armor is part of what makes a story like Solo Leveling invigorating, because it tickles our own desire to be the protagonists of our lives. in any case, Sung has the Demon’s Castle next. He knows that if he went straight for the dungeon — a multi-floored nightmare containing untold terrors — he’d lose, and quick. He’s already tired from fighting Cerberus, and has no weapons to hand. It’s much smarter to regroup and come back when he’s fitter and well-stocked in his inventory. This is in contrast to the Solo Leveling manhwa, where Sung Jinwoo fights Cerberus in Chapter 28, before moving straight onto the castle in Chapter 29. However, the Cerberus fight is a shorter affair that doesn’t take as much out of him. A-1 Pictures saw fit to make it all a much greater test of our hero, and the result is considerably more character-driven. Seeing Sung Jinwoo come within striking distance of his goal, the three ingredients for the Elixir of Life to cure his mother, but decide against it for now shows real self-awareness. The anime version doesn’t hold the same weight, since the throne has been dialed down, as has the background, and fans are divided on their feelings. “It looks like he didn’t receive damage in the anime but I liked it overall,” writes one on Reddit. They have a point – the exhaustion doesn’t seem quite as palpable for Sung Jinwoo, who just survived a serious and brutal encounter. “What the anime seems to lack, is clothing destruction. His clothes always seem to be without a scratch in the anime. Happened in Episodes 4 as well,” says another commenter. “The manhwa panel makes it look like he’s dead compared to the anime’s which just looks tired,” says a fan.
