Dice Developer explains why strange words get blocked by Battlefield V\u2019s chat filter Dice Multiplayer Producer David Sirland has explained how Battlefield V\u2019s controversial chat filter tags certain words that it thinks could be escalators to toxic chat, and says developers are working to fix the system. Responding to a user on Twitter who asked why words like \u201cwhite man\u201d and \u201cDLC\u201d are censored in Battlefield V, Sirland said the system uses uses a dictionary from several EA games to tag certain words or combinations that could lead to toxic chat. According to Sirland, the whole system is \u201cbased on some sort of algorithm that has tagged certain combinations of words to be escalators to toxic chat,\u201d but he admits \u201cI don\u2019t claim to understand how it all works in detail.\u201d Because the system is using a dictionary derived from several EA games based on some sort of AI learning algorithm that has tagged certain combinations of words to be escalators to toxic chat (or similar, I don’t claim to understand how it works in detail) \u2013 we will change this. \u2014 David Sirland (@tiggr_) September 15, 2018 Some of the words censored by the filter include \u201cTitanfall,\u201d \u201cNazi,\u201d \u201cDLC,\u201d \u201clag,\u201d \u201ceat,\u201d \u201cdefend,\u201d and even \u201cspaghetti.\u201d The censoring of such a wide variety of words has meant a lot of ridicule and questions from the community since Battlefield V\u2019s beta went live September 6. EA Community Manager Jeff Braddock also responded to players questions on the official Battlefield forums. Braddock reiterates Sirland\u2019s statements and writes that the chat filter is a \u201cwork-in-progress\u201d at the moment.
