In a blog post Wednesday May 23rd, Activision have stated that it was the ‘most watched’ game reveal in the franchise’s long history, an indication that the community is still well invested in coming CoD releases. Black Ops 4 will be the sixteenth main entry title in the CoD series (if including 2017’s ‘Modern Warfare Remastered’, a remaster of 2007′ CoD 4), and there has been concerns that the fan base, ever loyal, were becoming somewhat burned out. With much more competition in 2018 than there was say six or seven years ago, Call of Duty knows it needs to do much more to keep up with Fortnite, Overwatch and PUBG, as well as upcoming releases such as Battlefield V and Red Dead Redemption 2. But, at least for now, it seems that the strength of the Black Ops sub-franchise is enough to keep fans intrigued, as the community reveal received the highest ever viewing figures in the series’ history. Last week’s highly-anticipated reveal of Activision’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 delivered a record-setting debut with its livestream setting new marks for the most watched game reveal in Call of Duty history. The reveal livestream broke franchise records, including the most day one views as well as the highest concurrent viewers, while also blanketing social media as the #1 trending topic on Twitter globally during the broadcast. Views from the reveal event have already surpassed 80 million, including the livestream, official trailers and content creator videos. Of course, it is notable that Activision are including ‘content creator videos’ in these figures, given the number of popular creators that they flew out are likely to have inflated these numbers somewhat. The blog post also claims that “initial pre-orders are also strong through week one of reveal, and above last year” – so apparently, and unsurprisingly, it looks on course to perform better in sales than CoD: WWII. For more Call of Duty Black Ops 4, fans will likely have to wait until this year’s E3, where we will hopefully find out more about the Blackout Battle Royale mode, the highlight of the reveal for many, but the least of which was actually shown.
