When it was announced back in May 2019 that Treyarch would be taking over the main development of CoD 2020 from Sledgehammer Games, many of the rumors and leaks that followed claimed the game would be yet another Black Ops title. Some claimed it would be Black Ops 5, while others believed it would be a reboot of the series and take place during the Cold War era in the 1960s. On April 20, well-known CoD leaker TheGamingRevolution published a video dispelling those theories, and claiming that the next game will not don the legendary Black Ops title. That’s not to say that it won’t be tied into the same universe, however, as TGR made it a point to note that it is expected to crossover with BO story in some way. In fact, while it’s apparently not going to be a reboot, CoD 2020 could still be set in the Cold War era with some of the focus around the Vietman War, which the original BO game also featured. Speaking in TGR’s video, another YouTuber named ‘dkdynamite’ mentioned that Sledgehammer Games had reportedly been working on a Vietnam-themed CoD game back in the early 2010s, a project that got shelved early on but apparently was being revisited in 2017 for a possible 2020 release. Despite the fact that Treyarch took over the 2020 game’s development, they could have kept what SHG had been working on and just built upon that, which would tie in with all the speculation that’s been going around. As for what the game’s title will be, that’s still very unclear. Dkdynamite explored the possibilities of it being called “Call of Duty: Vietnam” which wouldn’t be out of the question since there have been several CoD titles in the past that have been directly named after wars, most recently WWII in 2017. As always, this sort of information should be treated as nothing more than speculation until Activision and/or Treyarch officially announce the game. TheGamingRevolution has proven to be more reliable than most when it comes to Call of Duty leaks, and even CharlieINTEL said that some of these new details matched up with what they had learned about the upcoming title. Whatever it turns out to be, the game is expected to be released this fall with cross-generational support, meaning that it could be released on the new PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X in addition to PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
