Evil Geniuses had come into Anaheim with very high expectations from themselves and fans alike, with a 2nd place finish at the last open event, CWL Seattle, and sitting in 2nd spot in Division A with a 5-2 series record. Whatever role problems the previous EG lineup had been experiencing seemed completely resolved after the addition of Adam “Assault” Garcia and Justin “SiLLY” Fargo, and the team were proficient in all three game modes. But Anaheim could not have gone less to plan, after a dismal pool play showing on Friday, a 2-3 against Mindfreak, 1-3 against UNILAD, and a 0-3 sweep from Echo Fox, left them without a series win on day one. They did recover slightly on Saturday with a win over open bracket team Elevate, and a 3-1 win over Lightning Pandas once in the losers bracket. But they lost their very next match to eUnited in a brutal game five round 11 loss – despite having been up 5-3 in the final S&D – meaning they failed to win a single S&D at the event, and missed out on Championship Sunday with a top 16 placing. When asked who the most disappointing team at Anaheim was, Maven said there was no debate: It is absolutely, without question, Evil Geniuses. There’s no way to argue any other team. They were 5-2 in the Division [A], good at Search and Destroy, everyone has them as a favorite, maybe even a top three favorite. He continued, explaining that their awful S&D was one of the worst he had seen, and that it was an embarrassing event for the squad. They come in, they don’t win a single search and destroy, the go 0-8, one of the worst performances I’ve seen from a team that many considered contenders at this actual event. Someone who could maybe make a run to another grand final. It was incredibly, incredibly disappointing, I’d be embarrassed if I was anyone on that squad.
