The rumors were sparked after comments made by studio co-head at Treyarch Dan Bunting, and subsequent leaks of the ‘specialist’ edition of the game, which did not include a season pass. In previous years, Call of Duty titles have released three or four DLC ‘packs’, which include an assortment of multiplayer and zombies maps, plus new weapons, outfits and more, all for the cost of around $10-$15. As an alternative to paying the $15 at the time of DLC release, fans could simply purchase a season pass, giving them all the DLC packs at no extra cost. As Dan Bunting explains however, in an interview with Polygon, it looks like Treyarch will be shifting away from this model. “I can’t tell you at this point in time what [DLC] is going to look like, but I can tell you that we are pushing hard to release content to our fans in a way that’s going to make them happy and a way that we believe is the right thing to do in this stage in our game’s lifespan.” With Black Ops 4’s increased emphasis on team play, forcing players to purchase DLC packs in order to play with their friends like in the past, doesn’t seem conducive this time around. As opposed to players getting the usual four maps every couple of months they will receive a map, or in some cases two maps, every month.” This is said to desirable because it will avoid the drop in player base which Call of Duty titles see after the release of a DLC map pack. The leaks also claim that there will still be a season pass, but for Zombies only. It would be the same as a traditional season pass, but would only contain Zombies related content. Certainly, the paid DLC model has been becoming more outdated, with games such as Fortnite releasing a lot of content either for free, or allowing players to purchase small individual items as and when they choose. Black Ops 4 also has a new battle royale mode too of course, called ‘Blackout’, and because this will split the player base of multiplayer, Treyarch may be keen not to split it further by having paid multiplayer DLC and season pass. None of the leaks are confirmed of course, and any plans which Treyarch have could change before release.

New Leaks Suggest Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Will Feature Free DLC and Zombies Season Pass Breaking new leaks suggest that the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will no longer follow the same DLC model fans have become accustomed to, instead shifting to a free model.
