In recent years, cross-platform play between console and PC players has been prevalent in a number of game genres – though, it has exploded thanks to battle royales like Fortnite. While players have been able to test their skills against an even bigger pool of players, the debate about keyboard and mouse versus controller has raged on, especially with controller players having aim assist. That’s no different in Call of Duty: Warzone and while shroud claims that he doesn’t mind it, he doesn’t want to see it used in tournaments. During his March 20 stream, the former Counter-Strike: Global Offensive professional had been gearing up to compete in the Warzone from Home tournament hosted by 100 Thieves when he and teammate GaGod dived into cross-play. With GaGod using a controller and shroud on PC, both players give their viewpoint on things, with the controller user admitting to the assist being pretty overpowered. So, shroud chimed in. “No random schmuck can just pick up mouse and keyboard and do somewhat well, they’re going to suck, and they’re going to suck a lot. But, if you grab like a controller there is a chance it will just assist you in some situations,” he said. “That’s the whole point of it. I don’t mind it.” The Mixer streamer continued on, noting that Warzone being cross-play is “really cool” and that he “loves it,” but does he have some issues with it. “I’ve always been like this and I’ve always said there shouldn’t be aim assist or controllers or whatever in tournaments,” he added. “You shouldn’t mix it. Either you go only controller or only PC. In Apex, for example, when you have half and half, the competitive integrity is already gone from the get-go.” Other games like Fortnite have tried to split the player base in tournaments by running some console-only events, but, cross-play remains a huge draw for players. While the aim assist is overpowered debate will rage on, developers are unlikely to make any sweeping changes because there has to be a level playing field. Otherwise, PC players would likely run rampant.

Shroud explains why controller has a big advantage on Warzone and Apex Mixer: Shroud/UnsplashStreaming superstar Michael ‘shroud’ Grzesiek has explained why he loves Call of Duty: Warzone and Apex Legends being cross-platform, but feels that when it comes to tournaments, there shouldn’t be any cross-play involved.
