For the better part of a year, PewDiePie had been locked into a battle for YouTube supremacy with Bollywood music label T-Series \u2013 keeping his rivals at bay for as long as humanly possible thanks to overwhelming fan support. The Swede\u2019s viewers had pulled out every trick in the book, including holding their own parade, hacking into games like Grand Theft Auto, and getting professional sports teams involved with their own displays and performances. Users of the PewDiePieSubmissions subreddit, which the YouTuber regularly checks-in on in his videos, had been aiming to raise $3,000 so that they could fly a plane around Manhattan, New York with a thank you PewDiePie banner attached. That initial goal was smashed, as fans raised over $4,000 and were able to organize the flying of a \u201cSubscribe to PewDiePie\u201d banner on April 29 \u2013 the ninth anniversary of his channel. However, on April 28, the Swede called for his fans to stop using the message as it had become more just a meme \u2013 with some using it to vandalize the Brooklyn War Memorial, sparking outrage from local residents.
