As the face behind RFLCT skincare, Valkyrae immediately sparked backlash surrounding the beauty products\u2019 claims it protects against \u201cblue light pollution\u201d emitted from screens without sharing the research or conclusive evidence to back it up. Many labeled it as a \u201cscam\u201d, causing the influencer to draw back from social media, stating that she was just as confused herself but would address everything soon. And on October 23, she did just that. Valkyrae addresses RFLCT skincare \u201cscam\u201d drama \u201cIt was before I announced my YouTube switch,\u201d she began her YouTube stream with, which has since been removed within hours of going live. \u201cI\u2019ve been on YouTube for over a year and a half now, through UTA, which is the talent agency my manager works for. [Beauty industry reps] found me and they had a meeting with me and they said they really liked my brand, and they brought a bunch of products and samples and they asked me if there was something I was interested in, to make.\u201d According to Valkyrae, she was skeptical of the blue light-protecting claims at first, but then was shown studies and research that showed evidence. \u201cThey ran tests for six months with chemists in labs. I saw the research with my own eyeballs, I was really excited because I thought it was groundbreaking research,\u201d she continued. \u201cI was excited, I thought it was going to help people. They would send me samples of products. I tested the smell, the formula, the color of the packaging. For example, the lip balm, I asked for it to be unisex, that\u2019s why it\u2019s matte. That was my involvement, I am not a chemist, I\u2019ve never been to the lab in person, I\u2019ve just seen the research.\u201d Valkyrae claims the research can\u2019t be published She then addressed a comment in her YouTube livestream chat asking if she knew that the website wouldn\u2019t have published research on it. \u201cI saw a lot of comments from people saying \u201cGoogle it\u201d\u2026 They ran their own studies, their own research. This whole time, I was under the impression that all this research that I saw was going to be on the website. When RFLCT dropped, it was crucial for there to be research but all there was was a WebMD link,\u201d she said. \u201cI was confused, I learned their studies can\u2019t be publicized. That was the part I was very na\u00efve about, I didn\u2019t know that,\u201d the 29-year-old explained. \u201cIt\u2019s very hard to be a part of something where they can\u2019t show what they\u2019ve done. They can\u2019t show it because the specific research can be stolen by other companies. The individual research being researched with how it works with blue light, I saw that. I am the face for it, so I am the one who gets all of it. Isn\u2019t that crazy? I saw their research, I loved it, I thought it was so sick and I can\u2019t wait to be a part of this,\u201d she said, before revealing that she no longer wants to be a part of it. \u201cI am in a bound contract. I do believe in the product but I do also wish to not be involved because the research can\u2019t be public. That\u2019s the hard part. And that\u2019s the honest truth\u2026 I don\u2019t know if I really want to continue.
