This weekend saw hundreds of competitors taking to the Battle Bus, in an attempt to qualify for Week 8 of the Fortnite Summer Skirmish. With 33 players qualifying each day, it was a tie at the bottom of the standings that grabbed everyone’s attention. With The_Real_Cryohme and Colton both level on points in joint 33rd, a coin flip was used to determine who would take the last spot in Monday’s Grand Final, with The_Real_Cryohme winning the coin flip and progressing. The coin flip, which was worth $5000 to the winner, was used due to Colton and Cryohme being level on all aspects. While the competition has a number tiebreakers in effect, both players were tied in Victory Royales, total eliminations and average placement so none could be used. Spectators of the Summer Skirmish believed that 99 was the limit for players competing in the Grand Final due to the 100th spot being occupied by the Spectator Cam, however that has been confirmed to not be the case. Colton, however, will still not be allowed to take that last position, as Epic claim it would be unfair to the other players who placed 34th – even though none of them were actually tied for 33rd spot originally. In the aftermath, fans felt that a coin flip was an unfair way to eliminate a player with massive amounts of money on the line. In a comment on Reddit, Esports Developer Colin ‘SkyzYn’ Fogle confirmed that while the scenario was unprecedented, Epic had “communicated the tiebreaker order repeatedly through broadcasts, rule-sets and verbally to competitors at the PAX West Summer Skirmish” Fogle also confirmed that Epic Games weren’t happy about having to use the coin flip, and stated; Going forward we will look at some additional ways to break ties, although we are currently a bit limited. One common suggestion is various types of ‘Damage Dealt’ stats, but that stat is currently not reliable and thoroughly tested enough to determine placement. While it’s good news that Epic intend to add additional tie-break options, this has unfortunately come too late for Colton.

A Coin Flip Decided the Final Qualifier Spot at the PAX West Fortnite Summer Skirmish A coin flip was used to determine who won the last qualifying spot in Grand Final of the Fortnite Summer Skirmish at PAX West.
