After ten weeks of grueling online open qualifiers, the finalists for the World Cup – which takes place July 26-28 in New York City – have been finalized for both the solo and duo tournament. To the surprise of many, a number of top players from other major tournaments, such as Team Liquid’s Ryan ‘Chap‘ Chaplo and FaZe’s Dennis ‘Cloak‘ Lepore, failed to book their place, after Epic Games decided to lower the age requirements to allow younger players to compete. Among the players to miss out was popular controller player NICKMERCS, who performed admirably alongside his friend and teammate Nio Rooch, but was unable to qualify from arguably the toughest region in the world. However, the former 100 Thieves member hit back at the idea that he wasn’t as good as his fellow competitors, after winning a fight against Team SoloMid stars Anthony ‘Zexrow’ and Vinny ‘Vinny1x’ Gilgan. “I know people say I’m bad – but I ain’t fucking bad,” he said. “I still body all these fucking nerds all the time. I got Ceice’s ass yesterday, I got Zexrow’s ass yesterday and I got Vinny’s ass yesterday.” Nick highlighted his opponent’s editing speed as the biggest advantage they have over him and admitted he could perform better if he changed his controller binds, allowing him to edit on the left stick. He said: “It would definitely be better for me if learned L3 edit.” While the 28-year-old may have missed out on qualification this time around, there is plenty more tournaments in the pipeline to prove his skills, including Epic’s first ever competitive trio event. No World Cup for ya boy, but that’s just the beginning. Made it to Sunday & secured prize money in all 10 qualifiers, I’m proud of that! Back to the drawing board for the Trio tournament in a few weeks!
