Now its developers are adding a permadeath mode because they’re sadists. Lords of the Fallen is a triumph of the genre. Our own four-star review calls it “one of the best Soulslikes not made by FromSoftware.” It had a bit of a rocky start thanks to some issues that forced developers to hold back crossplay. That’s all fixed now and players can go about build-crafting and working through its fantastic story with friends. Now that the hiccups are all ironed out, the development team behind Lords of the Fallen is looking to the future. In a recent Steam post, Hexworks outlined their plans for the long haul including the edition of a permadeath mode and other new challenge options. These additions are part of what Hexworks refers to as the “NG+ modifier system.” This system is intended to let players fully customize their New Game Plus playthroughs using a range of modifiers. It includes the aforementioned Hardcore mode which immediately restarts the playthrough upon death. There are also item and enemy randomizers as well as some yet to be announced features. “The feature set is yet to be fully defined,” Hexworks explained. “Our current intention is to release the modifier system before the end of the year.” That’s encouraging news given there are only a few months left of 2023. Obviously, these changes aren’t actually sadism on the part of Hexworks and have been added for the benefit of players. Soulslike fans are well-known for instituting their own no-death runs and this will make it a little easier. Lords of the Fallen has a lot of players to cater to as well. Hexworks has recently celebrated the sale of 1 million copies of the game after all. If you’re one of those 1 million players, or you’ve been sufficiently enticed by these new challenges, we have a bunch of guides to help in your journey through Mournstead.
