The Star Fox franchise is one of Nintendo’s most beloved, but the series has had a few troublesome entries in recent years that missed the mark for fans. In 2016, Nintendo finally returned to its on-rails shoot-em-up with Star Fox Zero, a remake of the original that couldn’t match the success of Star Fox 64 in large part due to its cumbersome and downright horrid Wii U control scheme. Now, years removed from the disappointment of Star Fox Zero, a new report claims that Nintendo is gearing up for a new Star Fox game that will launch on Switch 2 hardware. New Star Fox game reportedly coming to Switch 2 In a blog post by leaker Zippo, it’s reported that for the first time since Star Fox 64 that a new entry in the series is supposedly in development internally at Nintendo. That’s not all, though. Online multiplayer is also apparently going to be a big part of this new title and will allegedly be released on Nintendo’s next console. “There is a chance that it’s a cross-generation release,” Zippo explained, adding that the game is slated to come out within the next 12 months. Backing up these claims, the leaker shared screenshots of Star Fox trademark filings from December along with an entirely brand new trademark – meaning it wasn’t an old one being renewed. Star Fox sequel raises timeline questions Zippo states that this game is a sequel to an existing Star Fox title and is not another reboot of the series, but it’s unclear what game it will be a sequel to. The Star Fox series timeline is anything but consistent. The franchise began on the SNES and was slated to have a sequel, Star Fox 2, which ended up being canceled – only to eventually be released for the first time ever on the SNES classic and eventually Nintendo Switch online. Star Fox 64 was a remake of the SNES version and included some elements of the canceled SF2. This was followed by a couple of GameCube games. First came Star Fox Adventures, which introduced the character of Krystal, and subsequently Assault. The final game in the Star Fox 64 timeline, Star Fox Command, was released on the Nintendo DS in 2006 to mixed reviews. From there, the series was rebooted with Star Fox Zero. Could this new game be a continuation of that game or will the series return to somewhere in the Star Fox 64 universe? Of course, take all of this with a pinch of salt until we get confirmation from Nintendo, but hopefully it won’t be long until we’re back to doing barrel rolls and saving the Lylat system.

Nintendo reportedly developing new Star Fox for Switch 2 and it’s planned for this year NintendoA new Star Fox game is reportedly in development for the next Nintendo console, and it could come out as early as this year.
