After keeping its console design under wraps for what feels like ages, Sony finally debuted the PlayStation 5’s official console design during its “The Future of Gaming” livestream. It debuted with much panache, serving up a space age chassis with an intriguing design that we’ve not seen on any PlayStation system in the past. It’s a far cry from the blockier Xbox Series X, and looks a bit more like a spaceship or a futuristic building than a system that plays video games. Not only did the console finally get some time in the spotlight, but it was revealed to be releasing in two different formats: one system with a disc drive and one system without, known as the “Digital Edition.” There were also several new accessories announced alongside the consoles, including a new HD camera as well as a media remote and wireless headset. Sony isn’t just courting us when it comes to the next console generation with a new system and games – it also wants us to buy some new accessories to complete the transformation. Here’s everything we learned from the PlayStation 5 reveal event about the system thus far. PlayStation 5 reveal: Standard and Digital Editions When the PlayStation 5 was finally revealed during the “Future of Gaming” livestream, it turned heads with its unorthodox appearance and somewhat strange form factor. However, it’s an aesthetically pleasing look for the PlayStation brand, and it matches the DualSense Controller’s color scheme quite nicely. There will actually be two different models of the PS5, however, and you can choose the one that’s right for you when it’s finally time to preorder the system. Standard Edition: The standard PlayStation 5 is the model that will likely be the most prevalent. It will include an optical 4K Blu-ray disc drive. It will be a bit thicker than the Digital Edition to support the optical drive, and as a result you’ll be able to play any compatible disc with the system. This is the option you’ll want to choose if playing disc-based games is important to you or you don’t want to solely rely on digital titles. Sony has yet to confirm further differences between the Standard Edition and Digital beyond the type of media and storage that can be utilized on either console. Digital Edition: The Digital Edition doffs the optical drive and is not compatible with discs as a result. It also looks quite a bit thinner than the standard PS5 console. You’re meant to store all your games digitally with this option, so this is for anyone who just isn’t interested in physical copies or disc-based backward compatibility. There should be plenty of space, as both the standard and Digital Edition PS5 will come packing a previously-announced 825GB solid state drive, which is a massive amount of space, so if you’d prefer to go discless for what we can only assume is a somewhat significant amount of savings, that’s an option. PlayStation 5 accessories: HD Camera, Pulse 3D Wireless Headset, Media Remote, Charging Station After officially revealing what the PlayStation 5 would look like, Sony gave everyone a look at just some of the accessories that would be coming to the market as well. From a newly-designed headset to a charging dock for the new DualSense controller, there’s plenty you can purchase to outfit your PlayStation 5 with when it debuts. The official PlayStation 5 accessory lineup includes the following in addition to the DualSense Controller, as shown off during the reveal livestream: HD Camera: The new PlayStation 5 camera will feature dual 1080p lenses and will likely be utilized with any new PlayStation VR that’s announced in the future. It will offer a much clearer picture than the old camera, and that should make it even simpler to stream from home via console instead of forcing users to have their on PC setup if they want to share their favorite games. Pulse 3D Wireless Headset: Sony is upgrading its wireless headset line and offering 3D audio support. This feature has been touted as absolutely integral to the PlayStation 5, so it’s no surprise that Sony is pushing it heavily with the official PS5 headset, which also offers noise-canceling microphones. Media Remote: This sleek new remote looks like it has more in common with Apple products than Sony, but it looks to offer a lot of options as well. It even features a built-in microphone to navigate the PS5 via voice and what appear to be programmable buttons along the bottom that could be customized to your liking. There’s no pricing information currently available for the accessories, nor the DualSense controller, so hopefully that information is coming down the pipeline soon. PlayStation 5 price: How much will the PS5 cost? The cost of the PlayStation 5 is unclear at this point in time. Unfortunately, Sony has yet to offer any information in terms of the system, console, or accessory pricing. There’s also no release date at this time beyond the vague “holiday 2020” we’ve been hearing ever since the PS5 was officially unveiled. Read More: Horizon Zero Dawn 2: Forbidden West announced for PS5 As we get ever closer to the PlayStation 5 release date, this should hopefully change, but as of right now all we can do is surmise what kind of cost we’re looking at with the system. It’s highly likely that it could end up costing more than the PlayStation 4 did when it first debuted considering what it has under the hood, but we’ll have to wait and see. We will continue to update this page as additional information about the PlayStation 5 is revealed.

PlayStation 5 officially revealed – Digital Edition, accessories, more SonySony has officially revealed the PlayStation 5 in all its glory, and it’s a drastically different design than what we’ve seen from PlayStation in the past.
